BRYAN, Texas – Redshirt junior Jake Brown closed out the NCAA Bryan Regional in style on Wednesday afternoon, hitting a 4-iron from 216 yards to 12 feet to setup a final birdie that put him at 1-under par for the tournament and a tie 14th in his NCAA postseason debut.
The 215 overall score is the best by an IU golfer in NCAA postseason play since current assistant coach Corey Ziedonis shot 213 at the 2011 NCAA Regional.
Over the 54-hole tournament, the Carmel, Indiana recorded 38 pars, which tied for the most among all 75 golfers in the tournament. He also played the par 3's in Even par and was tied for 12th in scoring on the par 4's (Even).
In the first two rounds, Brown had to scramble right from the start on holes 1 and 2, but the final round was a different story. He hit a perfect drive off the first tee and then his approach shot ended up on the back edge of the green, but just 15 feet from the hole and two putts later he was in with a par.
The second hole – a 216-yard par 3 – was one that Brown had not been able to hit in regulation over the first two rounds. But, again, round three was different. His 4-iron stopped 12 feet from the hole and he ran that putt in to get to 1-under for the round and the tournament.

But trouble ensued on the next two holes, with errant tee shots leading to back-to-back bogeys and putting Brown back to 1-over par overall.
Brown tried to get one of those bogeys back on the par 5 fifth hole when his approach shot landed a foot from the flag but spun back off the front of the green. He was able to navigate the difficult uphill birdie putt to leave himself with a tap-in par.
On the sixth hole, Brown was able to spin a wedge to about 10 feet and then he buried the birdie putt to get back to even par on the round.
Over the next five holes, he had numerous birdie chances but was unable to convert.
When he came to the par 4 12th hole, Brown was still even par for the round and hit a perfect drive in the middle of the fairway. His approach shot with a wedge trickled to the back of the green, leaving a tricky downhill 40-foot putt for birdie. The birdie putt ran well by the hole and the comebacker for par was offline as well to give him a bogey and move to 1-over par.
Just as he did on the front nine, he was able to respond on the very next hole, a 381-yard par 4. He set himself up well on the hole with a drive in the center of the fairway, leaving just 100 yards into the sharp dogleg right hole. He was able to control the spin into the green and left himself an 8-foot birdie putt, which he made to get back to even.
After an outstanding up-and-down par on the 14th hole, and pars on 15, 16 and 17, Brown came to the last hole with the goal of finishing the tournament under par. After a drive to the right side of the fairway, he had 216 yards left to a back right hole location. He grabbed a 4-iron and hit one of his best shots all week, flying the ball right over the flag stick and leaving himself 10-feet for birdie. After struggling on the closing hole on Tuesday, Brown got a measure of vindication on Wednesday, draining the birdie to finish at 1-under par.
The five teams that qualified for the NCAA Finals from the Bryan Regional were Texas A&M, Clemson, Baylor, UCLA and Kentucky. The one individual that will move on is Braden Thornberry from Ole Miss.
Brown closes the 2017-18 season with a scoring average of 72.50, which ranks as the 11th-best single-season scoring average in school history.
