Hoosiers Drop Tournament Opener to Illinois, 7-1

OMAHA, Neb. – Indiana baseball (37-16) dropped its Big Ten opener to the Illinois Fighting Illini by a score of 7-1 on Wednesday night. The Hoosiers will face Michigan State in an elimination game on Thursday.
Junior Jonathan Stiever tossed a quality start, allowing three hits in six innings and three unearned runs. He struck out two in the loss.
The Hoosiers were held to just two hits in the contest, a double by junior Ryan Fineman and a single by junior Luke Miller.
Illinois' Zac Taylor led off the sixth inning with a double down the left field line. Then with two outs, Stiever surrendered a walk and the two runners eventually advanced on a wild pitch. From there, an errant throw by sophomore Jeremy Houston and a dropped fly ball in right field resulted in the three unearned Illini runs.
The Illini got to senior reliever B.J. Sabol in the seventh inning. The first two hitters reach via walks. An RBI single by Ben Troike and a three-run home run by Michael Massey upped the Illini lead to 7-0.
Indiana got a leadoff double from Fineman in the top of the eighth. After freshman Elijah Dunham worked a walk and Fineman advanced on a wild pitch, and Kaletha recorded an RBI groundout, resulting in a 7-1 score.
The Hoosiers will face the Spartans at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday.
