Indiana’s 1V4 earns highest individual finish since 2014
SARASOTA, Fla. – Indiana's rowing team completed their weekend at the 2018 NCAA Rowing Championships with 60 points and a 13th-place team finish at Nathan Benderson Park. Two of the three IU crews exceeded their initial seeds, led by a top-10 finish from the first varsity four boat.
The Hoosiers' first varsity eight grabbed 12th-place after taking sixth in their petite final, while the second varsity eight earned fourth-place in the C final for a 16th-place finish overall.
Indiana's first varsity eight crew launched the day's events at the break of dawn, earning a sixth-place finish in their A/B semifinals with a time of 6:59.021. They followed that afternoon with a time of 6:44.318 to earn a 12th-place overall finish, two spots above their initial seed.
A season of solid performances continued for the varsity four boat, despite the tougher conditions in the water, with a fifth-place finish at 7:26.260 in their A/B semifinals. The Hoosiers won a battle in the final sprint with Washington State, crossing the line a half second before the Cougars' boat.
In the varsity four petite final, the Hoosiers kept the composure that guided them throughout the weekend. They went stroke-for-stroke with Iowa and Washington State through the first quarter and pulled away from both, crossing the line at 7:21.549 for a 10th-place finish. That's the highest finish by a Hoosier four-woman crew since 2014 and—like their counterparts in the first varsity eight—an improved result from their preliminary seeding.
Indiana wrapped the morning session on a high note with a courageous effort from the second varsity eight, taking second-place in their C/D semifinals while pushing Southern California from wire-to-wire. The Hoosiers finished each split only a second behind the Trojan boat and crossed the finish line less than two seconds after USC. The tandem put ten seconds between their finishes and Navy's third-place result.
The second varsity eight crew returned to the course Saturday afternoon and sealed a 16th-place finish in their group, taking fourth in the C final with a time of 6:38.329.
