Quick Start Leads Hoosiers Past Ball State

Indiana earned goals from Buwalda, Scire in first 20 minutes of action
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Hoosiers secured their first win of the season with a 2-0 result at Ball State on Sunday afternoon. Indiana (1-1) bested the Cardinals (0-2) by gaining a pair of back-to-back goals in the first 16 minutes of the game and utilized a strong defensive effort to protect their lead.
"I'm really pleased with the team effort today," said Indiana head coach Amanda Janney Misselhorn. "We were able to have everyone get in the game and contribute to the win. It helps to have the depth in our forward line where we're able to run ice hockey lines to keep our forwards fresh and working hard to keep up the attack. The depth of our team is really showing."
Indiana wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in their first road test of the year. Following an offensive penalty corner in the 14th minute, senior Elle Hempt made sense of the scramble and lasered a pass to sophomore Bente Buwalda by the goalpost. Buwalda's redirect found the back of the boards, notching her first goal of the season and third in her career.
Just 50 seconds after their opening strike, IU doubled their lead. A swift counterattack from the pushback brought the ball into the Hoosiers' offensive third. Junior Andi Jackson threaded a long ball to fellow junior Sam Scire, who one-timed the shot to beat the goalkeeper to the left side for her third career score.
Much of the early sparks stemmed from junior Ciara Girouard's performance on the forward line, who created several attacking chances including the decisive attack corner after 14 minutes.
"This game was a true battle of mental toughness after Friday's home game," said senior Elle Hempt, who recorded her first assist of the year. "Having the discipline to get to those places we needed to be in order to put those goals away was clutch, and it set the tone for the rest of the game."
The Hoosiers outshot the Cards 12-8, placing seven on frame. The 10 attack penalty corners earned by Indiana is the most in a single game since last year's outing at Saint Louis (10/1/17), where they recorded 16 corner attempts.
Two games into the season, the Hoosiers have found goals and assists from three different players. The diversity in their attack encourages the IU coaching staff as it showcases their depth on the offensive end.
"It's great to see the variety of different goal scorers, and getting a field goal in both games has been a positive for us too. Our corner unit has been excellent in the past, but getting some great field goals is a good sign for us."
The Indiana defense did well to thwart any threats from the Cardinals down the stretch. Much of that was due to the intensity they maintained by constantly rotating fresh legs onto the turf. The Hoosiers found contributions from everyone on the roster, including a split shutout effort from goalkeepers Shelby Querry and Sachi Ananias. The pair combined for four saves in their first career shutout.
"Shelby and Sachi played fantastically today in goal, and Sachi stepped up in the second half to keep the lead," Janney Misselhorn continued. "The coaching staff was pleased to see the young players step up when the game pressure was on them."

The Hoosiers return to practice as they ready for arguably their favorite road trip of the season, a return to the Keystone State and the East Coast with two games in Philadelphia. Indiana opens with a Labor Day Weekend rematch at Villanova before heading to Drexel, taking on the Dragons for the first time since 2013.
"Heading to the East Coast is exciting for all of the East Coast girls because it's an opportunity to essentially play for a home crowd away from home," Hempt said. "Going into the weekend with a win under our belt will be huge for our confidence in practice this week."
