Solid Start for Hoosiers at Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational

Competing in one of the strongest fields, top to bottom, in collegiate golf, the Indiana men's golf team posted an solid opening round score of 288 (+8) to sit in ninth place heading into round two.
California and defending national champion Oklahoma State are tied for the team lead at 7-under par. The Hoosiers trail Big Ten foe Illinois (+5) but lead in-state rival Purdue (+15).
TAP-INS
• Junior Brock Ochsenreiter used three birdies and three bogeys on his way to a tie for 13th at Even par. The Nashville, Tenn., native went out in 2-over par but played the second nine in 2-under par with two birdies and seven pars.
• The opening round 70 is Ochsenreiter's best score of the young season. He started the year last weekend at Champions Pointe with back-to-back 75's before carding a final round 72 (E).
• Sophomore Ethan Shepherd continued his strong play to start the season, although his round got off to a rough start on Friday. On his first hole, the tenth hole, he posted a double bogey but went on to play the next 17 holes at Even par to tie for 28th at 2-over par for the day.
• Redshirt senior Jake Brown checks in a 3-over par and is tied for 31st. His opening nine holes were a roller coaster with two birdies, three bogeys and one double bogey before he settled down on his back nine with seven pars, one birdie and one bogey.
• Freshman Mitch Davis, making his first appearance in the team's lineup, logged bogeys on holes 15, 16 and 17 and then parred the other 15 holes to match Brown at 3-over par and a tie for 31st.
• Redshirt senior Jack Sparrow was unable to avoid the big number in round one and is tied for 73rd after an 81 in round one.
