BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer capped a perfect weekend by defeating Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Bill Armstrong Stadium, 3-0. The Hoosiers extended their unbeaten streak to six games with the win and improved to 2-0 in Big Ten play.
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana jumped ahead early as senior Maya Piper found the back of the net in the ninth minute. After a fantastic cross into the box by redshirt senior Mykayla Brown, junior Chandra Davidson's left-footed attempt hit off the crossbar and the post before coming back out to Piper, who buried it for her second goal of the season.
• Sophomore Melanie Forbes extended the IU lead in the 21st minute as she brought the ball up from just past midfield and took on the Spartan defense. Her shot from the top of the box slid past MSU goalkeeper Reilley Ott and in to the far post.
• A rocket from Caroline Dreher in the 57th minute further sealed the victory for Indiana. After Piper dropped the ball off to Dreher, the senior blasted a shot from 35 yards out as it curled just under the crossbar for her second goal of the season.
NOTABLES
• Indiana is now 6-1-2 on the year, while Michigan State fell to 5-2-2 and 0-1-1 in Big Ten play.
• The perfect start for IU in Big Ten action is the first time the program has begun the conference schedule with a 2-0 mark since 2007. In addition, at 6-1-2, it is the best start to the season since IU began the 2013 campaign 8-0-1.
• Sophomore goalkeeper earned her third shutout of the season as she collected three saves. IU defender Claudia Day also came up huge for Indiana as she earned the Hoosiers a team save on Michigan's State best look of the day – a shot by Camryn Evans in the 31st minute. It marked the second straight game Day was there for a team save.
• IU now has six players who have scored two or more goals on the season. In total, 10 have found the back of the net at least once.
• Indiana has scored two or more goals in eight out of nine games this season and the Hoosiers are outscoring opponents, 22-11.
QUOTABLE
"This team has a lot of heart and a lot of resilience and it's a type of resilience we haven't had in past years. On top of that, our defense has been really strong and we've been putting a lot of goals in the back of the net."
--Senior Maya Piper
"We called on the kids to try and put together a full 90-minute performance today and build off Thursday's win. They did an incredible job. We call on our attacking players to be dynamic and understand that often the most important players are the ones without the ball. They've really embraced that. The exciting thing is we're not looking back. We are focusing so well from the coaching staff to every player on the task at hand every single time we step on the field. That's kept us from getting overly excited. We've been able to put ourselves in this great position to this point, but we still have a long season and a lot to learn."
