Sept. 26, 1959 – In 1958, first-year Hoosier Coach Phil Dickens had turned some heads by leading IU to a 5-3-1 record, a surprise to many since Indiana, as Sports Illustrated pointed out in its 1959 College Football Preview, had long been "a runt pine amidst the Big Ten's tall timber." Dickens' Hoosiers got the 1959 season started in fine fashion, whipping Illinois 20-0 in the Sept. 26 season opener. The victory was impressive – the Illini proceeded to beat No. 4 Army 20-14 the following week, and ended the season 5-3-1 overall and ranked 13th in the final AP poll. Ultimately, the loss to Indiana kept the Illini from claiming the Big Ten title.
Sept. 26, 1987 – Indiana bounced back from a 34-15 loss at Kentucky to hand Missouri a hard-fought 20-17 setback at IU's Memorial Stadium. The win didn't come easily – after Missouri took a 17-13 lead with 3:49 to play, IU faced a 4th-and-17 from the Missouri 43. IU quarterback Dave Schnell connected with Ernie Jones for an 18-yard gain, and the pair hooked up again on the next play for the game-winning score. The Hoosier victory started a five-game winning streak, the only such single-season five-game streak that Indiana Football has enjoyed since its 1967 Rose Bowl season.
Sept. 26, 1992 – During his four-year Hoosier career, Hoosier tailback Brett Law amassed 1,134 yards on 258 carries. Amazingly, almost one-quarter of that production came in one game. Law carried 42 times for 240 yards and two touchdowns on Sept. 26, 1992, to help Indiana to a 20-10 win over Missouri. It was one of two career 100-yard games for the Sheridan, Ind., product, who also rushed for 140 yards on 27 carries in an Oct. 9, 1993, game against Iowa.
Sept. 26, 2009 – Nine year ago today was…the gum throwing game. Former Hoosier Coach Bill Lynch is well known for leading IU to its first bowl game in 14 years following the 2007 season, but he's also remembered for expressing his disgust in unique fashion following a questionable interception call in the closing minutes of a 36-33 loss at Michigan on Sept. 26, 2009. With the Wolverines leading 36-33, Hoosier quarterback Ben Chappell's pass to Damarlo Belcher was ruled an interception after Michigan cornerback Donovan Warren ripped the ball from Belcher's hands as the two players tumbled to the turf. Instead of simultaneous possession, the play was ruled an interception.
