BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana Women's Soccer saw five different Hoosiers score as IU defeated Kentucky on Friday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium, 5-1. The win marked the third straight for the Hoosiers and it was the most goals in a single game since the 2013 squad scored five goals on three occasions.
KEY MOMENTS
• Senior Caroline Dreher put the Hoosiers on the board in the 17th minute as she took a corner kick and bent it all the way in to the far post for her first score of the season.
• Senior Abby Allen doubled the IU lead in the 27th minute as she scored her fifth goal of the year. After junior Chandra Davidson brought the ball up the middle, she sent in a good look that was saved by Kentucky goalkeeper Hannah Leonard. However, the rebound fell right to Allen who collected it and sent it to the back of the next in the 27th minute.
• The Hoosiers made it 3-0 before halftime off the foot of junior Allison Jorden. After an initial IU corner was cleared, junior Meghan Scott re-served the ball into the box to Jorden, who finished it from seven yards out.
• Kentucky got one back in the 48th minute thanks to a goal from Miranda Jimenez.
• In the 54th minute reining Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Annelie Leitner buried an absolute rocket from 27 yards out, marking her third straight game with a goal.
• The final Hoosier goal of the game was a career first for sophomore Melanie Forbes, who was helped by assists by sophomore Ana Garibaldi and Maddie West – which were the first career points for both. Forbes scored in the 79th minute to put a cap on the win.
NOTABLES
• Indiana improved to 4-1-1, while Kentucky dropped to 3-4-0.
• 10 different Hoosiers earned at least one point against the Wildcats.
• Leitner is the second Hoosier this season to score in three straight games. Allen did so to start the season.
• Indiana's 18 shots are the most in a game this season. IU outshot the Wildcats, 18-10, including 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
• IU has scored two or more goals in every game this season and have 16 total goals through the first six games.
• Sophomore goalkeeper Bethany Kopel recorded four saves in the win.
QUOTABLE
"We had five different goal scorers and that's just the perfect description of the game. We had every single person contributing and we couldn't have done it without every single player on the field and off the field.
We've learned this year that we're a team that can compete with anyone. The past three wins have given us a lot of confidence going forward and given us a lot of momentum that we can take into the next game and then head into the Big Ten season with. Every single game, we can compete and come out on top if we play together and grind."
--Junior Allison Jorden
"We came in on a mission. We talked about last weekend how we survived a bit even though we came away with the wins. We worked all week on trying to put it all together – offensively and defensively. On every line of the field, we had players step up, including those who didn't start the game but came in and changed it for us.
All these wins are great and we've put ourselves in an incredible position with one non-conference game remaining. But that one game could be crucial for us so we need to celebrate tonight but find a way to get that victory Sunday against a very good Kansas State team."
