Tournament Notes
After a year's absence due to golf course renovations, the Cougar Classic returns to Yeamans Hall Club for its 15th edition. The Cougar Classic's tradition of excellence continues in 2018 as some of the best collegiate players in the world vie to put their names in the tournament record book. The University of North Carolina returns to defend its 2016 team title behind defending individual champion Kelly Whaley. The stellar field will include eight teams ranked inside the Top 25 at the end of last season. Headlining the field individually will be the current NCAA Individual Champion Jennifer Kupcho from Wake Forest. Also in the tournament field is Arkansas' Maria Fassi, who earned the 2018 Annika Award, denoting the NCAA Women's Player of the Year. In 2016, UNC set the tournament record with a 26-under par total of 838. The Tar Heels also own the largest margin of victory in the history of the Cougar Classic, winning by eight shots in both their 2010 and 2016 victories.
Lineup Experience
Indiana senior Erin Harper has played in 82 rounds for the Cream and Crimson over the last three years. The other four players in the IU lineup have played a total of 101 rounds at the collegiate level combined, with 56 of those coming from graduate transfer Kari Bellville while she was at Notre Dame.
Harper Among the Best In the Nation
Erin Harper has continued to prove that she is among the top golfers in the country. She qualified for the NCAA Madison Regional last year as a junior and then advanced on to the NCAA Championships in Stillwater, Oklahoma as well. Most recently, she qualified to Stage II of LPGA Q-School.
Two IU Debuts
There will be a pair of golfers making their debut in the Cream and Crimson this weekend, as freshman Alexis Miestowski and graduate transfer Kari Bellville are in the lineup. Miestowski led Lake Central High School to a pair of state championship appearances and captured state medalist honors in 2015. Bellville played three seasons at Notre Dame before sitting out the 2017-18 season and then transferring to IU prior to the 2018-19 season.
Sophomore Sensations
A pair of sophomores round out the Indiana lineup to start the season, with Angela Aung and Priscilla Schmid. Schmid ranked third on the team with a scoring average of 74.16 last year while Aung posted a scoring average of 77.40 as a freshman but has shown an improved game in early season qualifiers.
Last Time at the Cougar Classic
Harper will be making her second appearance at the Cougar Classic after she played in the tournament as a freshman. She posted scores of 72-72-74 to finish in a tie for 12th individually while the Hoosiers took eighth as a team.
