No. 10 Hoosiers Score Five in Win Over Ohio State
10/29/2019 11:30:00 PM | Men's Soccer
KEY MOMENTS
• Freshman Victor Bezerra found the back of the net twice in the first 10 minutes of action to get the Hoosier offense going. His first goal came in the sixth minute off a cross from redshirt junior Spencer Glass. Bezerra redirected the cross right in front of the goalkeeper and into the right corner of goal.
• Bezerra would strike again in the eighth minute on a free kick. He capitalized on an opportunity from 22-yards away after placing the ball in the upper-right corner to beat the keeper.
• Freshman Joshua Penn increased the Hoosier lead to 3-0 in the 29th minute with his first goal of the night. He received a through ball from freshman Herbert Endeley, defeated the defender with a series of moves, and snuck a left-footed grounder beyond the outstretched arms of the keeper.
• Penn once again dazzled with his second tally of the contest. He received a long service pass from reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week Aidan Morris, controlled the touch, and chipped the ball from six-yards outside of goal over the sliding keeper. His brace gave Indiana a 4-0 lead.
• The Buckeyes avoided the shutout with a goal in the 76th minute from senior Jack Holland. The assist was credited to sophomore Luke Kiley.
• Junior Thomas Warr put the finishing touches on the match with his second goal in the last three matches. Bezerra notched his fifth point of the match after playing a pass through to Warr streaking down the left flank. Warr slipped by the defender and nestled an eight-yard shot just inside the left post to beat the goalkeeper and give Indiana a lead by the final tally of 5-1 in the 78th minute.
NOTABLES
• Indiana has scored 13 goals in the last three matches combined. That total marks the largest three-match goal output by an IU men's soccer team since scoring 14 goals from Oct. 8-15, 2000.
• With four goals coming from freshmen against the Buckeyes, 18 of the 33 IU goals this season have been scored by freshmen.
• Both Bezerra and Penn share the team-lead with five goals, while Bezerra has registered a team-best 13 points this season.
• The Hoosiers are undefeated in the team's last 36 matches at Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium, posting a mark of 32-0-4. The last Indiana loss at home came to No. 20 Virginia Tech, 2-1 in overtime, on Nov. 27, 2016 in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Indiana continues to dominate the series history between the two Big Ten programs. The triumph bolsters IU's advantage to 44-5-4 overall and 17-3-2 in Bloomington.
• Prior to the game, Indiana honored four seniors, Joris Ahlinvi, Sean Caulfield, Jordan Kleyn, and Simon Waever, as part of the program's Senior Night festivities.
