
Hoosiers Place Fourth and Sixth at NCAA Great Lakes Regional; Veatch Earns Individual Bid

MADISON, Wisc. – Indiana Cross Country finished competing at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday Afternoon on the campus of the University of Wisconsin. Punching his ticket individually, Ben Veatch led the Indiana men to a fourth-place finish with 87 points. Bailey Hertenstein led the Hoosier women as they finished the meet in sixth with 175 points.
It was a big women's race for the state of Michigan as both Michigan and Michigan State earned automatic bids to NCAA Championships. Wisconsin's Alicia Monson took the individual top spot on her home course.
In the women's field, Indiana saw all seven runners within the top-100. Hertenstein put up another solid performance on Friday afternoon as she pushed her way to a sixth-place finish with a time of 20:19.9. Sarah Schmitt was the next Hoosier to cross the finish line as she picked up 12th place with a time of 20:38.8. Running in her final regional race, Kelsey Harris secured a time of 21:12.5 to take 36th. Abi Little crossed 54th and clocked a time of 21:38.2. Freshman Abby Green had a strong performance as she nabbed a time of 21:48.6 to place 67th. Finishing five spots later, Jenna Barker clocked a time of 21:53.1 to finish in 71st. Freshman, Mikaela Ramirez rounded out the field for the Hoosiers as she crossed the line in a time of 22:11.8 to place 90th.
In-state foe, Purdue, took home the regional title on the men's side to earn their automatic bid while Notre Dame picked up the other automatic spot in the NCAA Championships. Cincinnati's Aaron Bienenfeld led the entire race as he won the meet individually.
It was Veatch who led the Hoosiers in the men's race as he earned an individual bid to the championships with a time fourth place finish in a time of 30:14.6. Kyle Mau finished three spots later in seventh with a time of 30:18.4. Continuing to prove his strength, Arjun Jha raced to a time of 30:3.7 and a 12th place finish. Crossing the finish line 23rd, Bryce Millar clocked a time of 30:25.0. Reese Jordan secured a time of 31:23.3 to place 41st. Finishing back-to-back, Dustin Horter and Matthew Schadler rounded out the field of Hoosiers. Horter finished in a time of 31:33.7 to place 47th while Schadler clocked a time of 31:44.7 and placed 48th.
Hertenstein, Jha, Mau, Millar, Schmitt and Veatch earned All-Region honors on Friday afternoon.
Up next, the Hoosiers will await their fate for NCAA National Championships. The selection show will air on NCAA.com on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.
The NCAA Championships will be held in Terre Haute, Ind. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on the campus is Indiana State University on Saturday, Nov. 23. The women's 6k is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. followed by the men's 10k race at 12:15 p.m. Both races will stream live on FloTrack.
