No. 8 Hoosiers Advance to Big Ten Conference Title

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 8 Indiana men's soccer team (14-2-3, 7-1-0 Big Ten) defeated the No. 22 Maryland Terrapins (11-6-2, 3-3-2 Big Ten), 1-0, in double overtime of the semifinals of the 2019 Big Ten Conference Tournament at Ludwig Field on Friday night. Sophomore Jack Maher's penalty kick in the 103rd minute was the difference in the contest.
KEY MOMENTS
• The Hoosiers earned the first corner kick of the match in the sixth minute. Freshman Joshua Penn was able to fire off a shot but it was blocked by a Maryland defender.
• Penn and the Hoosiers got off to a quick start in the second half. In the 46th minute, Penn fired off a shot on target but the Terrapins keeper was able to grab it.
• In the 53rd minute, freshman Victor Bezerra got a clean look inside the 18-yard box but the Maryland goalkeeper picked up his fourth save of the night.
• Indiana saw a dangerous opportunity in the 70th minute of play as redshirt hunior Spencer Glass fed the ball to redshirt junior A.J. Palazzolo inside the box. Palazzolo squared up the ball but could not get between the pipes as it went wide.
• To end regulation, Maryland earned a free kick just outside the 18-yard box but the Indiana defense locked in to send the game into overtime.
• In the 103rd minute of double overtime, the Terrapins were called for a handball inside the box which sent the Hoosiers to the penalty stripe. Maher would take the penalty kick for Indiana as he sunk the game-winner to send the Hoosiers to the Big Ten Tournament Finals.

• With the win Indiana earns their 19th berth into the Big Ten Tournament Championship in program history and fifth in the last seven years.
• Indiana is 39-10-9 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament.
• The Hoosiers are now 5-4-7 against Maryland all-time.
• Indiana had 22 shots and held the Terrapins to just six.
• With Friday's shutout, Indiana now has kept eight opponents scoreless this season. The Hoosiers have yet to let up a goal in the 2019 Big Ten Tournament.
• Penn led the Hoosier attack with five shots, three of them on target.
• Maher's goal was his second game-winner of the season, his last coming against UCLA on Sept. 2.
