
No. 8 Indiana Captures 10th Big Ten Double

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 8 Indiana men's soccer team (14-2-4, 7-1-0 Big Ten) played to a 0-0 draw against the Michigan Wolverines (11-4-5, 4-1-3 Big Ten) in the championship tilt of the 2019 Big Ten Conference Tournament at Ludwig Field on Sunday afternoon. Indiana claimed the title by way of a 4-3 advantage in the penalty kick shootout.
The tournament crown is the 14th in program history for Indiana. The Hoosiers also claimed the title in 2018, giving IU back-to-back conference tournament championships since the program won six-straight from 1994-99.
Indiana pulled off the Big Ten regular season and tournament championship double for the 10th time in school history and for the second-straight season. The last time IU secured back-to-back doubles came in the 1998-99 seasons.
KEY MOMENTS
• Freshman Victor Bezerra launched a one-timer from 20-yards away that nearly snuck beyond the Michigan goalkeeper, but the shot was barely saved in the 14th minute of play.
• Michigan narrowly missed out on the first tally of the contest after sophomore Derick Broche found himself open eight-yards in front of the net in the 53rd minute. Broche sailed the ball high of goal and came up empty on the shot attempt.
• Freshman keeper Roman Celentano stood tall in middle stage of the second half as he recorded back-to-back saves on solid Michigan chances in the 66th and 67th minutes.
• Indiana flirted with a Golden Goal as two Hoosiers, senior Simon Waever and Aidan Morris, attempted shots inside the 18-yard box in a scramble inside the final minute of the second overtime.
• Celentano came up clutch in the PK shootout for the Hoosiers, The Naperville, Ill., native secured two saves in the five attempts from the Wolverines. Indiana received successful PK conversions from redshirt sophomore Joe Schmidt, redshirt junior A.J. Palazzolo, junior Thomas Warr, and the winner from freshman Joshua Penn.
NOTABLES
• Sophomore Jack Maher was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player of the Tournament. Redshirt junior Spencer Glass and Morris joined Maher on the All-Big Ten Tournament Team.
• Indiana will enter the NCAA tournament on a season-best seven-match unbeaten streak. The Hoosiers have outscored opponents 17-2 during the streak.
• Indiana did not concede a tally throughout the entire Big Ten Tournament. In fact, the Hoosier defense has recorded four-straight clean sheets dating back to the final contest of the 2019 regular season.
• The Hoosiers hold a Big Ten Tournament record of 39-10-10 all-time and are 22-3-3 overall against the Wolverines.
