After breezing through its first three matchups of the season in Bloomington, No. 17 Indiana Women's
Basketball headed south for its first power-five conference matchup of the season.
It passed that test with flying colors, a resounding 73-49 victory over Florida last Friday night in
Gainesville.
That kicked off a five-game stretch away from Bloomington that includes three top-25 matchups
against Baylor, South Carolina and Miami (FL).
"The experience is obviously important," IU head coach Teri Moren said. "It'll be good for us to
get our feet away from Assembly Hall. It will give us a good test down in the U.S Virgin Islands
and I know it'll give us a lot of things we have to be better at."
This will be one of the toughest stretches that this program has faced in recent memory. It will
feature some of the top teams in the nation while also giving IU a chance to boost its RPI.
Redshirt junior guard Ali Patberg embraces the challenge that comes with playing some of the
best teams in the nation and believes that she's prepared for this moment.
"I expect the pressure," Patberg said. "It's just being a leader, accepting the pressure. It's
always coming prepared, mentally and making sure our team is ready. I've put in so much work
my whole life and I'm willing to accept that pressure from all the work I put in. It's pressure, but
it's good pressure because I love playing."
Moren believes the key to balancing a schedule like this is to not let the play of one game to
affect the outcome of another.
In a stretch where IU will have to play three straight days over Thanksgiving break and follow
that up with another ranked matchup next week in Miami, it will be key in keeping the team
composed.
"One of the things I try to tell our team is that you never get too high after a win and never get
too low after a loss," Moren said. "You want to stay right there in the middle. If we win, we enjoy
and we come the next day and get to work. If we lose, you get 24 hours to feel sorry about
yourself and we got to come back the next day and get back to work."
There's no doubt that IU is ready to get to the U.S. Virgin Islands to play the likes of Baylor and
South Carolina. Even though it's a trip to Paradise over Thanksgiving Break, it's still a business
trip.
They've prepared for it like that.
"Coach has created a culture," Patberg said. "We're super competitive and we're hard workers.
All of us are really excited to play the top teams in the country. We're so prepared and ready
because of the coaches. We're ready and excited. It's a dream come true to go play in the
Islands and play the top teams in the nation."
IU's first game in the Virgin Islands is Thursday night against South Carolina with subsequent
matchups with Baylor and Washington State to follow in the days after.
