BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Fall training has wrapped up for the Indiana Rowing team as it competed in three scrimmages to prepare for the upcoming 2020 season.
The Hoosiers faced off with Louisville (Sept. 21), Iowa and Wisconsin (Oct. 4-5) and Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame (Nov.3) in three separate scrimmages throughout the fall. Races against Louisville and Iowa and Wisconsin took place on IU's home course at Lake Lemon.
"With the fall season wrapping up in the next few weeks, we are very happy with the progress that we have made this year" Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said, who enters his 17th year leading the program. "We have been dealing with a very large number of injuries and illnesses, that are thankfully not rowing related, but they have affected our numbers none the less. However, despite those setbacks, our team has consistently performed well and gotten faster on the ergs, lifting more weights in the weight room, and are moving the boats well this fall."
Their fall competitive season concluded on Sunday, November 3 when they traveled to Columbus, Ohio in a scrimmage against Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame.
"We had three very competitive scrimmages where we were able to test our speed against top regional opponents. In all three cases, our athletes were able to take away both positive things and things they need to improve upon, which is our goal any time line up against another team in this type of scrimmage setting."
The Hoosiers now set their sights on the 2020 season, which begins Saturday, March 14th with Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, TN. Indiana will take a winter training trip to Tampa, Fla. from January 4-11 and have spring break training here at home on Lake Lemon from March 16-21.
Other highlights of the 2020 schedule are the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual (Chicago, IL), the Big Ten Invitational (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), hosting the 12th annual Dale England Cup and the Longhorn Invitational (Austin, Texas). IU is aiming to make their seventh-straight NCAA Championships appearance in the upcoming season. Last year, they finished 12th overall at the NCAA Championships which were held at Eagle Creek State Park in Indianapolis.
"We are excited looking toward the spring. We have a very challenging regular season schedule that should prepare our crews well for the Big Ten Championships and beyond. I do think the next few months of winter training will have a huge impact on how we do this spring. Our athletes know they need to carry the momentum they have from their fall training over the winter months, so that we can pick right back up in the spring. If we can do that, we should see some very fast crews this spring. The team is looking to finish higher than we ever have before at the Big Ten Championships and qualify for our 7th straight NCAA Championship."
