BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Over the course of the 2019-20 wrestling season we will feature newcomers on the team with this Meet the Hoosiers series. This week, Asa Garcia, a freshman from Avon, Ind., answered some questions.
Why did you choose to wrestle at Indiana?
I chose to wrestle at Indiana because it felt like home with the coaches who all hold different personalities. It also gave me the opportunity to represent the state I was raised in and gave my family the ability to watch me do what I love without traveling too far.
What are you most excited about to begin your Hoosier wrestling career?
I'm excited to be a part of the group that lays the foundation and new standard of what it means to be a Hoosier on the wrestling team. It's not a process I'm unaware of as I was a part of the same rebuilding process at my high school but to do it all over again at this high of a level would mean so much more.
When did you first start wrestling?
I started when I was 6! #meanstreetsofmuncie #765
What is your favorite wrestling memory?
My favorite wrestling memory would have to be my whole senior year of high school because I feel like I made the most of every second in my last year with guys and I grew so much as a leader and mentor to my old team. I also got the opportunity to compete with my younger brother, Blaze, for the first time!
What are you majoring in at Indiana and why?
I chose to major in sports marketing and management because I thought it would be interesting and will help me to eventually own my own wrestling academy to spark the same love for the sport I have in the younger generations!
What is your favorite meal?
My moms carnitas!
What is your favorite TV show?
I don't really have one, but I enjoy contest shows like American Idol, The Voice, etc.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is Monsters Inc.
What is your favorite sport other than wrestling?
I enjoy watching football and baseball.
Who is your sports hero?
My sports hero is Henry Cejudo
