DURHAM, N.C. – The No. 24-ranked Indiana Softball team improved to 7-0 on the season as the Hoosiers swept day one of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, defeating Duke, 3-0, and Syracuse, 6-5, in the nightcap.
Indiana's 7-0 start is the best since the 1990 campaign when the Hoosiers began the year 11-0. In addition, it marks only the third time in program history IU has started 7-0 or better with the other year coming in 1977.
Game One: No. 24 Indiana 3, Duke 0
KEY MOMENTS
• Senior pitcher Tara Trainer was perfect through the first six innings. Her perfect game bid was broken up on the leadoff batter in the seventh as Marissa Gagliano reached on a Hoosier fielding error. The first Duke hit of the game came on a two-out single from Jameson Kavel.
• After junior Bella Norton drew a leadoff walk to start the second frame, sophomore Maddie Westmoreland delivered a two-run shot off the scoreboard in left field to give IU a 2-0 advantage.
• Indiana tacked on a run in the fourth after Norton led off with a double to left and was brought in on a two-run single from junior Katie Lacefield.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Trainer finished the day with six strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
• IU saw hits from Norton, Westmoreland, Lacefield and sophomore Annika Baez.
• Westmoreland's home run was the first of her season and the 11th of her career.
• Freshman Tete Hart scored her third run of the season as she came home on Westmoreland's home run.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"Tara Trainer was near perfect today and I couldn't be any prouder to give her the game ball. Maddie gave us the quick shot in the arm with a two-run bomb and that was huge. We didn't do a ton offensively, but we got what we needed and winners find a way to win and right now that's what we're seeing out of this ballclub."
Game Two: No. 24 Indiana 6, Syracuse 5
KEY MOMENTS
• Indiana got on the board in the first as Norton knocked her first home run of the season, a two-run look to left field. The homer also brought in Lambert, who had reached on a leadoff walk.
• Head's up base-running tacked on a run for Indiana in the following inning as freshman Paige Chitwood stole second base then advanced all the way home on a pair of Syracuse errors. Chitwood was in running for Baez, who was hit by a pitch.
• The Orange got one run back on a solo homer from Toni Martin in the fourth to cut the IU lead to 3-1.
• Syracuse used a three-run homer by Alexis Kaiser in the fifth to take a 4-3 advantage.
• IU wasted no time tying the game up after sophomore Makayla Ferrari doubled to lead off then was brought home on a single to right by Lambert.
• The Hoosiers drew three-straight walks with one out to load the bases in the sixth, setting things up for a two-run single to centerfield by sophomore Camryn Woodall to put IU back in front, 6-4.
• The Orange would not go quietly as a one-out sacrifice fly by Kaiser made it a one-run game. However, Trainer struck out the final batter to earn the save.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Junior Emily Goodin earned the win for IU as she tossed the sixth frame, surrendering one run and no hits.
• Freshman Natalie Foor received her third start of her career in the circle, going 5.0 frames with six strikeouts.
• Norton turned in a 2-for-3 performance to lead the IU bats.
• Lambert continued her hot start to the season as she drew a pair of walks to go along with her run, a single and RBI.
• IU stolen seven bases against the Orange, the most in a single game since March 20, 2016.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"Give credit to Syracuse and their fight. They are scrappy and were doing a good job putting bat on ball. We tied it up and what I was pleased with is we got the clutch hit. A thing our team has to understand is we have kids in and out of the lineup so when your number is called, make the most of it. Goodin did a good job coming in to be the sudden change we needed and Cam stepped up huge in that situation to give us the go-ahead runs and then Tara shut it down. I think we're doing a good job managing our bench and getting what we need even though offensively we have to find a way to start stringing hits together and come up big in moments. That's an improvement we can make, but got to love being 7-0 and have the start we're having."
