MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Indiana baseball (2-1) picked up a 6-0 shutout victory on Sunday afternoon to clinch its season opening series over the Memphis Tigers.
The Hoosiers capped off a strong weekend of starting pitching with a quality start from sophomore Tommy Sommer. The Carmel, Ind.-native tossed six innings, allowing five hits, striking out four and walking one.
Junior Matt Gorski lifted the offense early, as he hit a leadoff home run, while senior Logan Kaletha drove in a team-high three RBI.
KEY MOMENTS
• Gorski put the Hoosiers on the board in the top of the first, cracking a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to give IU the early 1-0 edge.
• Memphis provided its first threat in the bottom of the fourth. The first two hitters reached on base hits, but Sommer forced a flyout and two strikeouts to escape the jam.
• After sophomore Drew Ashley led off the top of the sixth with a double down the left field line, junior Jeremy Houston faced an 0-2 count but rallied to draw a walk to give the Hoosiers runners on first and second.
• Sophomore Justin Walker worked a one-out walk later on in the inning, leading to a two-run bases loaded single by senior Logan Kaletha, upping the Hoosier lead to 3-0.
• Houston led off the top of the eighth with a single, followed by Gorski reaching on an error giving IU runners on first and second. That led to a sac bunt RBI by Walker and a pair of sacrifice flies from Kaletha and senior Matt Lloyd to make it 6-0.
NOTES
• Sommer's six innings were a career-high, besting his previous mark of 4.1 innings against Ball State on April 18, 2018.
