KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Indiana baseball (2-2) dropped its series opener to the Tennessee Volunteers on Friday evening at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
The Vols used a three-run first inning to jump ahead on Indiana. IU senior starting pitcher Pauly Milto settled down after the three-run frame and struck out the final four batters he faced as he went six innings in the loss. Despite senior Logan Kaletha hitting a solo home run, the Hoosiers were held to just five hits.
KEY MOMENTS
• Tennessee got on the board in the bottom of the first putting up a three spot. After the first run scored on an infield hit and error, Evan Russell and Landon Gray hit back-to-back RBI doubles to give the home team a three-run edge.
• In the top of the fifth inning, the Hoosiers were able to get runners on the corners, as sophomores Cole Barr and Drew Ashley reached on singles, but were unable to get run production out of it.
• Kaletha got the Hoosiers on the board in the top of the sixth with a leadoff home run to left, cutting the Tennessee lead to 3-1.
• Tennessee tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Russell hit another RBI double and another run scored on a double play groundout.
NOTES
• Milto struck out nine hitters, which was one short of tying his career-high of 10 that he had against Texas Southern in the Austin Regional last season.
• The senior allowed three earned runs over six innings of work, marking the 17th quality start of his career.
• Kaletha's home run in the top of the sixth was his first of the year and the ninth of his career.
• The senior's home run ended a streak of 41 scoreless innings to open the year for Vols pitching.
• Junior Jeremy Houston's two-out triple in the top of the third inning was the sixth of his career.
• Sophomore Grant Sloan faced the minimum in the seventh inning as he tossed a scoreless frame of relief.
