BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana wrestling student-athlete Spencer Irick received the prestigious Jack D. Tichenor Award, the IU Varsity Club announced on Tuesday. He joins Allison Jorden (women's soccer) as Indiana's receipt of the award.
The Jack D. Tichenor Award is given annually to IU's top male and female student-athletes that hold the highest individual cumulative GPA among the entire Department of Athletics.
Since 1979 the Varsity Club has presented the Scholastic Achievement Awards to recognize student-athletes from each of our varsity sports who have excelled in the classroom.
Irick also received the Scholastic Achievement Award, which is given to the student-athlete that boasts the highest grade point average (GPA) of any member of their respective team.
Irick, a native of Fishers, Ind., is a redshirt sophomore majoring in Biology at Indiana. Irick plans to attend medical school upon graduation from Indiana.
"I am extremely proud of Spencer, and am thrilled to see that all of the countless hours of studying and his dedication to academics have resulted in the honor of being named this year's Jack D. Tichenor Award winner," said Angie Krilich, Assistant Director of Academic Services and Certification. "Spencer strives for academic excellence every day, regardless of the courses, which are growing increasingly more difficult as he moves through his Biology major and adds in pre-requisite courses for medical school. It is an absolute privilege to have the opportunity to work with such a talented student-athlete."
Spencer's brother Matt Irick won the Scholastic Achievement Award for Wrestling in 2016. Spencer is the second wrestler to win the Tichenor Award in the last five years – Trevor Moody was the winner in 2015.
