THE COACHES
Indiana Coach Archie Miller is in his 2nd season of guiding the Cream and Crimson. He has a 30-29 record since taking over the Hoosiers. He is 169-92 in 7-plus years as a head coach, which includes 6 years at the University of Dayton. His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2014. Hall of Fame Coach Tom Izzo is in his 24th year with Michigan State.
NEWS & NOTES
Michigan State will be the fourth straight nationally ranked opponent the team will play. Indiana is one of 13 teams in the nation with six Quadrant 1 wins and no losses in Quadrant 3 or 4.
Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the 10-member Preseason All-Big Ten team. Langford is the top freshman scorer in the conference averaging 17.1 ppg. He has shot 38.4% from long distance over the last 8 games making 15 of 39 3FG. He has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week 4 times. Langford's scoring average is the third highest for a freshman at IU. Eric Gordon averaged 20.9 in 2007-08 and Mike Woodson averaged 18,5 in 1976-77. His scored a game-winning layup with .8 remaining in double OT against Wisconsin.
Morgan earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors and USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week accolades after his record-setting 35-point effort against Butler. He has scored 1,246 career points (33rd all-time at IU) and is 4th in the B1G in double-doubles with 8. He had 15 points at Iowa and blocked a career-high 6 shots and followed up with a career-high 15 boards against Wisconsin.
Junior De'Ron Davis (ankle), who had only played 31 minutes in 6 games since December 19, played a season-high 25 minutes and posted more season-high's in points (12), rebounds (6) and assists (4) in the win against Michigan State. He is averaging 8.0 points and 4.0 rebounds in the last 7 games and is shooting a team-high 58.3% in that span.
IU was the top-rated shooting team nationally in non-conference games, making 53.7% from the field and 37.4% from long distance. That included games against Marquette, Arkansas, Duke, Louisville and Butler. Since Jan. 6, IU has shot 39.4% from the floor. In the last 3 games, IU's defense has held opponents to 37.7% shooting from the field and 24.7% (19-of-77) accuracy from long distance. Freshman Rob Phinisee is averaging 12.0 points in the last 2 games. IU was 10-2 when he went down with a concussion against Central Arkansas. He played 43 minutes against Wisconsin without a turnover.
