Indiana Closes out Weekend with 16-2 Loss Against No. 3 UCLA

Tempe, Ariz. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana University water polo team falls to No. 3 UCLA moving their record to 5-12 overall. The Hoosiers close out their two-game MPSF conference weekend with a 0-4 conference record after a hard-fought battle against the Bruins.

Indiana found themselves down early on with UCLA netting the first two goals of the game. The Hoosiers offense came to life just over half way through the first quarter when Tina Doherty found the net for a goal, cutting into the Bruins lead. UCLA gave a strong first period performance collecting another three goals for a four-point lead over Indiana.
The Hoosiers tightened up their defense in the second period and kept the game close, putting another point on the board this time coming from junior Emily Powell with an assist from Doherty. The Hoosiers went on to also grab two steals before the end of the half with one from Doherty and another from goalkeeper Mary Askew.
Indiana continued to fight hard defensively during the second half swiping another four steals from the Bruins, two from Doherty and one apiece from Izzy Mandema and Gillian Gatecliff. In the end the Hoosiers defensive hold couldn't keep up as UCLA's offense went to work registering another eight goals ending the game with a 16-2 upset for the Hoosiers.

Next weekend the Hoosiers will head to Ann Arbor, MI to face Big Ten arch rivals and CWPA No. 1-ranked University of Michigan. The two last met in March of 2018 where the battle for the lead carried on throughout the entire game. In the end, the Wolverines walked away with a 7-9 victory over the Hoosiers leaving Indiana with a heart-breaking disappointment.
The Hoosiers look to redeem themselves this year as they look to take down Michigan during the Wolverines final home match of the season.
