Hoosiers Fall 16-8 to Big Ten Rival, Michigan

Ann Arbor, Mich. – The No. 22-ranked Indiana water polo team traveled to the University of Michigan for a Big Ten showdown against the Wolverines. No. 6 Michigan proved to be a tough battle for the Hoosiers as they took control early on, winning 16-8.
No. 6 Michigan 18, No. 22 Indiana 8
Indiana found themselves down from the beginning as Michigan collected four quick goals right off the bat. Freshman Tina Doherty found junior Gillian Gatecliff just minutes later grabbing the Hoosiers first goal of the game. Attacker Izzy Mandema found the back of the net with help from junior Emily Powell helping the Hoosiers narrow their four-point deficit.
During the second quarter, Doherty tossed in her first goal of the game on a five-meter penalty shot before registering her second right after. Sophomore Carlie Crumbaugh closed out the first half of play collecting the Hoosiers fifth goal with an assist from Powell.
Michigan tallied four more goals during the third quarter before Powell found Mandema for her second score of the game. In an attempt to catch the Wolverines, The Hoosiers rallied with three back to back goals during the final quarter of action with Doherty registering Indiana's final two points.
Goalkeeper Sarah Greeven posted nine saves to her season total of 85 during the Hoosiers time on defense. Three other Hoosiers joined her efforts, each grabbing a steal while Doherty snatched another two.
In the end, Indiana's defensive attack just wasn't enough to hold off the Wolverines, ending in a 16-8 loss for the Hoosiers.
