Oliver Advances on Opening Day of NCAA Championships

PITTSBURGH – Senior Elijah Oliver in his fourth NCAA Wrestling Championship secured an opening round win as the Indiana wrestlers opened the first day of competition at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday.
Oliver, senior Bryce Martin and redshirt sophomore Jacob Covaciu competed for the Hoosiers.
Oliver, the No. 15 seed in the tournament, got things started with an 11-4 decision against No. 18 seed Zeke Moisey of Nebraska.
In Championship Round 2, Oliver went up against No. 2 seed Nicholas Piccininni of Oklahoma State and lost by major decision, 13-2.
Oliver will compete tomorrow in session III in wrestlebacks against No. 17 seed Devin Schroder of Purdue.
Martin dropped his opening match by fall against No. 11 seed Bryce Steiert of Northern Iowa. He came back to battle against No. 27 seed Troy Keller of Buffalo in his second match. Martin trailed 3-2 going into the third but couldn't get any momentum as he lost by decision, 7-2.
Martin finishes the season with an overall record of 21-11 and a career record of 69-46. He finished in seventh-place at the Big Ten Championships this year.
Covaciu dropped both of his matches on the day. After a fall in his first match he came back and battled in his second match of the day. Going up against No. 30 seed Dean Sherry of Rider, Covaciu led 3-2 in the third period, but couldn't close it out and lost by fall in 6:49.
Covaciu completes a solid first season in Bloomington with a record of 17-14, two major decisions and five wins by fall.
