COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 22 Indiana Softball couldn't recover from a 5-0 first-inning deficit as the Hoosiers dropped game two of Big Ten play to Ohio State on Saturday afternoon, 5-3.
KEY MOMENTS
• Ohio State put up five runs in the first inning on a trio of hits and an IU throwing error. After back-to-back doubles by Bri Betschel and Lilli Piper scored the first run, a pair of walks loaded the bases. A wild pitch made it 2-0 before an Indiana throwing error to first base allowed two more runs to come across. The final run of the frame came off the bat of Claire Nicholson, who singled to center to bring in Niki Carver.
• The Hoosiers looked to respond immediately as sophomore Annika Baez was hit by a pitch and sophomore Grayson Radcliffe walked to start the second. A fielder's choice by senior Sarah Galovich moved pinch runner Tete Hart to third before she came home as a ball by sophomore Makayla Ferrari was mishandled by the Buckeye defense.
• IU continued to rally in the third, plating a pair of runs on a single by Radcliffe. Junior Gabbi Jenkins started things off with her second hit of the day on a single up the middle before junior Katie Lacefield walked to put two on. Junior Bella Norton then appeared to pop-up into a double play before the umpires met and ultimately ruled it an infield fly, allowing both IU runners to advance. Jenkins and pinch runner Paige Chitwood came home on Radcliffe's base hit to left.
• Three straight singles from sophomore Taylor Lambert, Jenkins and Lacefield loaded the bases with one out in the fourth but a double play on a flyout from Norton ended the threat.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Jenkins led the Hoosiers with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate.
• Junior Emily Goodin posted an impressive relief outing in the circle, tossing 2.2 scoreless frames and allowing just one hit.
• Senior Tara Trainer took the loss for Indiana as she went 3.1 innings and allowed five runs, two of which were earned.
• Indiana's record moves to 25-8 on the year while the Buckeyes improved to 17-9.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"A couple big hits and an error really hurt us in the first inning and it's tough when spot a good ballclub five runs in the first. I am very proud of our group to continue to fight and we know what we need to do clean things up and come out on top. We need to perform better."

The teams will wrap up the series tomorrow at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
