COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 22 Indiana Softball dropped Sunday's series finale to Ohio State, 2-0. Both of the Buckeyes' runs came across in the fourth frame.
KEY MOMENTS
• The Hoosiers drew a pair of walks to start the game as junior Katie Lacefield and Bella Norton each earned a free pass. Pinch runner Paige Chitwood and Norton each advanced on a wild pitch, but were left stranded on a strikeout.
• Following a quiet few innings for both teams, the Buckeyes plated a pair of runs in the fourth. Following a walk to Lilli Piper, she scored on a double down the left field line by Emily Clark. Clark then came home on a single up the middle by Kaitlyn Coffman. Josie Wood stepped into the circle in relief and after a hit batter, left the bases loaded to limit the damage.
• A leadoff single by sophomore Maddie Westmoreland in the fifth looked to spark the Hoosiers. Sophomore Makayla Ferrari came in to run and stole second before advancing to third on a groundout, but she was left there.
• One last rally came in the seventh as senior Sarah Galovich drew a one-out walk. However, the Hoosiers stranded her on a pop-up and strikeout.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Westmoreland and Davis had the lone Indiana hits of the day.
• Junior Emily Goodin took the loss in the circle. She went 3.1 frames and allowed just four hits.
• Wood went 2.2 hitless innings in relief and allowed just one baserunner.
• The Hoosiers are now 25-9 on the season while Ohio State improves to 18-9.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"We had some opportunities but we didn't clutch up. That's the difference – you have to tip your cap to Ohio State, they made plays when they needed to and they clutched up. Today a bright spot was Goodin and Josie and really Goodin gave us quality innings all weekend. That's going to help us in the long run which is exciting to see. I really think the best is yet to come for this team. We hit a bump in the road and the good thing is we get to go for a non-conference game at Louisville on Tuesday which will be a quality matchup. We can re-focus and re-tune and get ready for a homestand against Michigan State next weekend. We'll get back at it and look forward to us really bouncing back and getting back to true form."
UP NEXT
The Hoosiers conclude their non-conference slate with a Tuesday evening trip to Louisville. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
