
IU Qualifies Seven Individuals, Relay for Friday Night Finals at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 2-ranked Indiana University men's swimming and diving team continued competition at the 2019 NCAA Championships on Friday morning at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
The Hoosiers qualified a total of seven swimmers and divers on Friday morning at the NCAA Championships. Five individuals will compete in Championship Finals, while two swimmers and the 200 medley relay will be in Consolation Finals.
Heading into Friday night, the Hoosiers sit in third place in the team standings with 155 points. California leads with 212 points, while Texas is second with a score of 188.
400 IM
Freshman Mikey Calvillo placed 32nd overall for the Hoosiers in the 400 IM with a time of 3:46.67. Calvillo improved four spots from his seed time in the event.
100 Butterfly
Senior Vini Lanza will be the top seed for Friday night's Championship Final of the 100 butterfly after touching the wall with a time of 44.68. Lanza's time is the third-best in program history.
Bruno Blaskovic placed 20th with a time of 45.86, while freshman Van Mathias was 40th with a mark of 46.60. Gabriel Fantoni took 43rd in 46.74.
200 Freestyle
Senior Zach Apple continued his great showing this week for the Hoosiers, qualifying as the No. 3 seed for Friday night's Championship Final of the 200 freestyle with a personal-best time of 1:32.17.
Junior Mohamed Samy will swim in the Consolation Final of the 200 free after qualifying 11th overall with a mark of 1:32.54.
100 Breaststroke
Defending NCAA Champion Ian Finnerty will be the No. 2 seed for the Championship Final of the 100 breaststroke after touching the wall with a time of 50.61. Finnerty's time is the fourth-best in school history.
Freshman Zane Backes had a career-best performance in the prelims to earn the No. 5 seed for the Championship Final. Backes posted a time of 51.51 to earn his spot.
100 Backstroke
Indiana's Gabriel Fantoni will compete in the Consolation Final of the 100 backstroke on Friday night. The sophomore qualified 16th overall with a time of 45.37.
200 Medley Relay
The Indiana 200 medley relay team of Gabriel Fantoni, Ian Finnerty, Vini Lanza and Brandon Hamblin qualified ninth overall with a time of 1:24.25 and will the top seed in the Consolation Final on Friday night.
3-Meter Dive
Sophomore Andrew Capobianco will compete in the Championship Final of the 3-meter dive for the second-straight year. Capobianco earned the No. 2 seed for the A Final with a total score of 405.05.
James Connor's tremendous IU career came to a close on Friday afternoon, as the redshirt senior placed 19th overall with a score of 342.65. Connor leaves Bloomington a four-time Big Ten Champion, eight-time All-American and two-time Big Ten Diver of the Championships.
Mory Gould placed 29th overall with a score of 315.95.
The 2019 NCAA Championships will continue on Friday evening with the finals of the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 200 medley relay and 3-meter dive. The action gets underway at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at 7:00 p.m. ET.
