Hoosiers Take Down No. 31 Illinois

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – For the first time since 2008, the Indiana women's tennis team beat Illinois as the Hoosiers won, 4-3 over the No. 31 Fighting Illini on Saturday at the IU Tennis Center.
The Hoosiers (10-5, 1-0) started off doubles strong as Natalie Whalen and Caitlin Bernard won 6-3 in doubles and pushed their season doubles record to 19-5 for the season.
Illinois (5-7, 0-1) came back to win at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, both in tiebreakers to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. The Fighting Illinois increased their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 6 singles.
Then came the Hoosier comeback as Madison Appel started it with a victory over No. 57 Asuka Kawai, 6-4, 6-4.
Michelle McKamey and Caitlin Bernard followed with three-set wins to put Indiana up 3-2 in the match.
After Illinois won at No. 4 singles, 7-5 in the third set, all eyes turned to No. 2 singles and Natalie Whalen and Jaclyn Switkes with the score tied 3-3.
Whalen had won the first set in a tiebreak and dropped the second set to send the match to a third set.
Whalen had match point and returned a volley for the winner to clinch the match with a 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 7-5 win.
"I'm so proud of our team," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. "We battled all day long and showed great toughness. We never gave up in the match and that led us to victory."
Up next the Hoosiers host No. 13 Northwestern tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. ET at the IU Tennis Center.
