CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 17 Indiana Softball picked up two more victories in the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Tournament on Saturday to improve to 21-2 on the season and become the fastest team in IU history to hit 20 wins on a season. The Hoosiers defeated USC Upstate, 6-4, before returning to the diamond to defeat USF, 3-2.
Game One: No. 17 Indiana 6, USC Upstate 4
KEY MOMENTS
• The Spartans jumped to a 1-0 lead on a first-inning sacrifice fly by Megan Obier to plate Sarah Price. A stolen base put two in scoring position with two outs before a strikeout from senior Tara Trainer limited the damage.
• Indiana responded immediately, thanks to a bases-clearing double from sophomore Annika Baez and some Spartan miscues. The Hoosiers loaded the bases with no outs due to a fielding error on a grounder by sophomore Taylor Lambert, hit by pitch to sophomore Grayson Radcliffe and walk to junior Katie Lacefield. After a strikeout sent one down, Baez doubled to right center to give IU a 3-1 advantage.
• Two more runs came across the plate in the fourth, sparked by a one-out double by junior Gabbi Jenkins. She came home one out later as the Spartan shortstop misplayed a groundball from Radcliffe. Sophomore Makayla Ferrari came in to run for Radcliffe, stole second and then scored on a single by Lacefield to left to push IU's lead to 6-1.
• Freshman Natalie Foor stepped in to the circle in relief for Trainer in the fifth. After the Spartans added a run on another sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, Foor picked up a huge strikeout to get out of the jam and keep the score at 6-2.
• USC Upstate put together a late rally as Elisa Cecchetti sent a two-out two-run home run to left in the seventh, however the Spartans would get no closer as a flyout to right ended the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Jenkins went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored while freshman Tete Hart turned in the first multi-hit game of her career as she also went 2-for-3.
• Baez's three RBI are a new career high.
• Sophomore Bella Norton saw her hitting streak end at six games.
• Trainer earned the win, going 4.0 innings and striking out two. Foor earned the first save of her career in her 3.0 inning outing.
• Indiana also defeated USC Upstate on March 2 by a score of 2-0. Trainer had the victory in that matchup as well.
Game Two: No. 17 Indiana 3, South Florida 2
KEY MOMENTS
• After Lambert led off the game with a walk, she came all the way home as Lacefield dropped a single into shallow right center.
• South Florida tied up the game in the fourth on a leadoff homer from Lindsey Devitt. The Bulls threatened further after AnaMarie Bruni singled, stole second and advanced to third on an IU throwing error. However, a flyout to center left her on base.
• The Bulls scored the go-ahead run in the fifth as Tayli Filla came home after a single by Brooke Hartman skipped off Lacefield's glove at third into left field.
• Indiana responded immediately as back-to-back infield singles by Jenkins and Lambert and an intentional walk to Lacefield loaded the bases for Norton, who sent a two-run single through the left side to put the Hoosiers on top for good.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Jenkins recorded another multi-hit game as she again went 2-for-3 with a run.
• Radcliffe saw her reached base streak end at 15 games while Lacefield extended her hitting streak to eight games.
• Trainer tossed a complete game, fanning nine batters and allowing just five hits. With the win, Trainer is now 16-1 on the season, just one win short of tying her career high of 17 wins in a single season which she set last year.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"21-2 is fun but today was a full day of softball and probably one of the most fun days I've had with this group with all the clutch moments. Tara again was Tara and incredibly solid. Natalie Foor also gave us quality innings in that first win. We get down 1-0 and then Annika clutches up and clears the bases. Our staff is so proud of how this group has responded to being down. Almost every time this year that we've gotten down, we've answered in the next half inning and we saw it in both games. In game two, we take the early lead then they equalize then go up 2-1. Bella then comes up with the clutch hit to score two. Gabbi did some nice things to get on base, I really like the way she's seeing the ball right now and how she's coming on strong. What I really love is the leadership that we're getting out of people like Gabbi and Tara. That's why this program is off to the best start in history – it's the leadership and character of these kids."
