Hoosiers Drop First Round of MPSF Tournament to USC, 19-4

Stanford, CA -  The Indiana University women's water polo team fell 19-4 to No. 2 USC in today's first round of action at the MPSF Conference Championship in Stanford, CA. The Hoosiers now hold an overall record of 6-16 along with a conference record of 0-6.

USC (24-1, 5-1) opened up today's outing with the first goal of the game just 45 seconds into the first quarter. Indiana quickly responded to the Trojans offensive efforts with a two-goal counter attack.
 
Junior Megan Abarta was the first to put the Hoosiers on the board, finding the back of the net during a 5-on-6 powerplay. Minutes later Emily Powell used Indiana's second powerplay of the game to her advantage as she grabbed another goal for the Hoosiers with an assist from sophomore Carlie Crumbaugh.
 
USC went on to tally five more goals during the first quarter and another eight during the second before Abarta assisted freshman attacker Lauren Etnyre on Indiana's third goal of the game. During the first half of action, goalkeeper Sarah Greeven also registered three saves against the Trojans while in the net.
 
The Hoosiers stood their ground defensively during the second half of the game, only allowing a total of five more goals past, while goalkeeper Sarah Greeven registered another three more saves.
 
The Trojans scored three point during the third and a final two in the fourth. Sophomore Juli Hilovsky rounded out Indiana's final efforts with one last goal for the Hoosiers. In the end, the Trojans proved to be a tough test as they defeated the Hoosiers.

The Hoosiers move on to face No. 10 ranked and No. 6 seed Arizona St. during tomorrow's semifinal round of action at the MPSF Championship Tournament.
 
This will mark Indiana's second time meeting ASU this season. The two first met in March where the Sun Devils defeated the Hoosiers 10-5. Indiana looks to tomorrow's game as a chance to bounce back and claim a victory over Arizona St.
 
Tomorrow's matchup will be the last game of the tournament for the losing team, while the winning team will go on to challenge No. 20 San Jose St. at 2:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 28 for the final day of conference play.
