2019 MPSF Championship Tournament on Deck for Hoosiers

Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana University women's water polo team will travel to Stanford, CA this Friday to begin their post season campaign at the 2019 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference championship tournament, hosted by Stanford University. Seeded seventh in the tournament bracket, the Hoosiers will open up the weekend facing the No. 2 seeded and No. 2 ranked USC.
Last Action
Indiana (6-15, 0-6) enters the MPSF tournament after a victorious weekend in Bloomington as they hosted McKendree University for their final regular season action at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Hoosiers defeated the Bearcats 14-4 in their fifth home victory on the season.
Seven Hoosiers registered at least one goal with leading scorers Juli Hilovsky and Emily Powell each collecting a hat trick. Indiana also had a combined 10 steals against the Bearcats with Tina Doherty swiping three for a season total of 34.
Leading the Way for Indiana
Freshman Tina Doherty continues to lead the Hoosiers offensively, collecting a total of 39 goals and 19 assists in her debut season. Doherty has a combined seven hat tricks and has scored four plus goals across four different games, grabbing the No. 9 rank for goals scored in the MPSF Conference.
Joining Doherty's efforts is freshman Izzy Mandema and junior Megan Abarta. Mandema holds the second highest scoring record for the Hoosiers with 27 goals on the season to go with eight assists.
Abarta has tallied 19 goals as well as 19 assists and leads the Hoosiers in MPSF conference scoring, collecting an IU high of six goals against four conference opponents.
Defensively, Mandema has swiped 20 steals while drawing out a season high of 65 exclusions. Goalkeepers Sarah Greeven and Mary Askew have a combined 162 saves with 94 from Greeven and 68 contributed by Askew. Both freshmen have landed on the top-10 MPSF goalkeeper saves with Greeven claiming the No. 6 spot and Askew at No. 8.
Scouting the Trojans
USC (23-1, 5-1) continues to show their team dominance as they come off a successful weekend defeating No. 3 UCLA, 9-8. The Trojans have lost just one game this season against No. 1 Stanford during MPSF conference action in March.
Junior Maud Megens leads the Trojans in scoring and ranks third in the MPSF with 60 goals and 19 multi-goal games. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Longan has registered 204 saves this season, only allowing 77 shots into the net.
Hoosier Redemption
This weekend's outing will mark Indiana's third matchup against USC this season. The two first met in January at the UCSB Winter Invite where USC defeated Indiana 11-1. The Hoosier's looked forward to their next meeting in Los Angeles, CA during February, this time as an MPSF conference game.
The Trojans proved to be a tough test once again as they defeated the Hoosier's 19-1. Indiana looks at this Friday's matchup as a second chance to redeem themselves after spending the entire season preparing for this weekend's conference tournament.
Next Round
The winner of Friday's game will move on to the semifinal round, playing the winner between No. 3 seed UCLA and No. 6 seed Arizona St. on Saturday, Apr. 27 at 3:45 pm ET.
The losing team also moves on to the second round of semifinal action, facing the losing team between No. 3 seed UCLA and No. 6 seed Arizona St. on Saturday, Apr. 27 at 2 pm ET.
