ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Indiana Softball fell to No. 23 Michigan in the series opener on Friday evening at Wilpon Complex, 4-1.
KEY MOMENTS
• Michigan loaded the bases with two outs in the opening frame on a walk, single and hit batter. But junior Emily Goodin left them loaded as she picked up her first strikeout of the day.
• The Hoosiers used two-outing hitting to jump to a 1-0 lead in the second. After sophomore Maddie Westmoreland collected her first career triple on a ball down the right field line, sophomore Grayson Radcliffe plated freshman pinch runner Paige Chitwood on a hard-hit single to second base.
• Michigan's Lexie Blair put the Wolverines on top in the third as she sent a two-run homer to right field, also bringing in Natalie Peters.
• Two more Wolverine runs came across in the fourth on a two-out double by Peters, scoring Haley Hoogenraad, who reached on a Hoosier error, and Katie Alexander to make it 4-1.
• Indiana looked to rally in the fifth on back-to-back one-out singles by Radcliffe and senior Sarah Galovich. However, they were left stranded on a groundout and strikeout.
• Three walks loaded the bases for Michigan in the bottom of the fifth before Josie Wood, who entered the game at the start of the frame, retired two in a row to leave them on.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• With her triple, Westmoreland extended her reached base streak to 10 games.
• Radcliffe had a 2-for-3 outing to lead the Indiana bats.
• Sophomore Annika Baez and senior Sarah Galovich had the other two hits for the Hoosiers.
• Goodin took the loss for Indiana as she went 4.0 frames in the start, allowing a pair of earned runs and picking up a pair of strikeouts.
• Wood tossed a solid relief outing, going 2.0 scoreless innings.
• Michigan's Meghan Beaubien spun a complete game for the Wolverines, allowing five hits and a run.
• Indiana moved to 28-11 on the season with a 3-4 Big Ten mark while Michigan improves to 25-10 with a 7-0 conference record.
HEAD COACH SHONDA STANTON
"Beaubien had a great day. The margin of victory is so slim. We made a mistake defensively in the fourth and they put up a big swing. We were right there in the game and I don't think the score is indicative of the competitiveness of the ballgame. It was nice to see Grayson have two really quality at-bats. I thought Goodin gave us a great start and Josie came in and did her job, but you have to be able to score runs in the Big Ten to be successful.
UP NEXT
Indiana and Michigan return to the diamond on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed on BTN Plus. Additionally, a radio broadcast will be available on IUHoosiers.com with Sam Neidermann on the call.
