Track & Field Head Coach Ron Helmer Named Great Lakes Region Men’s Coach of the Year

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.— The U.S Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced their regional awards for the 2019 outdoor track & field season. Indiana Track & Field Head Coach Ron Helmer was named the Great Lakes Regional Men's Coach of the Year for the 4th time. Helmer also won the award for the indoor season this past March.
Helmer coached the men's team to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships on May 12. The mid-distance and distance squads raked in 64 of the 103 points scored by the Hoosiers at the conference meet. There were also seven individual champions at Big Ten's—Maggie Allen (10K), Adam Coulon (pole vault), Khayla Dawson (shot put), Leah Moran (triple jump), Ben Veatch (5K), Anna Watson (pole vault), and Cooper Williams (800m).
This coming week the Hoosiers will embark on their journey to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. 11 Indiana men will compete in Austin, Texas. Helmer and the team have the most entered on the men's side in the Big Ten.
These 11 men and the 6 Hoosiers will travel to Austin, Texas from June 5-8 for the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Adam Coulon and Brock Mammoser start things off as they will compete in the pole vault on Wednesday June 5 at 7:30 p.m. EST. Teddy Browning, Kenneth Hagen, and Joe Murphy will kick off the meet on the track for Indiana as they compete in the semifinal of the 1500m on Wednesday at 7:46 p.m. EST.
