BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – IU alum Lucas Sheridan (2011-15) will compete this weekend at Final X – Lincoln. He will be competing for a spot on the 2019 US Senior World Team in Greco.
Lucas graduated IU on May 8, 2015 and immediately enlisted in the United States Army and left for Basic Combat Training at Ft Jackson, S.C., on May 18 2015. Following that he completed Advanced Individual Training as an 88N Transportation Management Coordinator at Ft Lee, Va.. He was then attached to the United States Army's World Class Athlete Program at Ft Carson, Co. where he currently serves as a soldier-athlete and squad leader. He re-enlisted for six more years about a year ago, through 2024 and following the 2020 Olympics he hopes to go the Officer Candidate School (OCS).
Here are some questions with Lucas
Q:Looking back to world team trials evaluate that performance and coming back from dropping the first match, but winning the series?
A: Of course, the initial thought is, what was I thinking at the end of that first match? It was frustrating, winning almost the entire match and losing the last second, literary. But with that being said it reminds me of something Coach Goldman would always say; you have seven minutes for a reason. For me, I had three matches for a reason. In the Army we talk about the important of resiliency and after that first match I saw an opportunity to demonstrate my resiliency as not only a soldier, but also an athlete.
Q: How are you feeling heading into Final X. What do you need to do to have success?
A: I feel very confident. Physically and game plan wise, there is a few things I need to change up if I want to win. But mentally I just need to continue just as I have all season. This year I really switched up my mental game, I've taken a lot of pressure off myself and just got back to enjoy the sport I love.
Q:What are some lessons you have learned through wrestling both inside and outside of competition?
A: Now that's a list that can go on forever, but if I had to choose one thing that can really sum it up, it would have to be integrity. Doing the right thing, especially when no one is watching, is a difficult task at times. That Taco Bell drive through is empty, but I have competition next weekend maybe, and I know the coaches are going to kill us tomorrow before we taper off, but hey they won't know. But YOU will. And when you go into that competition and you need to score with 15 seconds left and you need to dig deep in your gut and pull something out? Don't let it be that Taco Bell that you got because you didn't think anyone would know. When you have integrity, especially with yourself, you go into these competitions with a little extra confidence knowing you've done the right things, you've done what it takes.
Q:Do you keep up with IU wrestling? What do you think about what Angel is doing with the program?
A: I do keep up with IU Wrestling through their social media and watch their duals on the Big Ten Network. I think Angel is doing a good job with the team so far and I wish him and the guys the best of luck.
