ROSEMONT, Ill. – Indiana Women's Basketball junior forward Brenna Wise and Indiana Men's Soccer senior midfielder Jeremiah Gutjahr have been named Indiana's recipients of the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
The pair was chosen as two of 28 honorees selected from a group of more than 350 students honored through the academic year who had displayed positive sportsmanship. One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution.
All of the Sportsmanship Award winners have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, these honorees must be in good academic standing and must have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
Wise played and started in all 34 games last season and led the Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 and a 21-13 overall record. The Pittsburgh, Pa. was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention last season as she averaged 12.0 points and led the team in rebounds with 6.8 boards per game. She led the league and was seventh in the country in free throw percentage with a 91.6 percent clip while scoring in double figures 19 times with a team-high four double-doubles.
Wise is pursuing a marketing degree in the Kelley School of Business where she holds a 3.82 GPA and was an Academic All-Big Ten and CoSIDA Academic All-District selection a year ago.
Gutjahr appeared in all 24 matches for the Hoosiers in his senior season, making 23 starts. He was a significant part of an Indiana defense that led the country in shutouts with 15. In addition, he netted a goal Indiana's victory against Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament Championship. For his career, Gutjahr appeared in 71 matches with 44 starts.
The Bloomington native, who was also a top candidate for the Senior CLASS award, graduated in December with a degree in Accounting and Finance and is currently playing in the MLS with the Chicago Fire.
