
Hoosiers Drop Opener Despite Big Second Half

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The #23 Indiana Hoosiers Women's Water Polo team opened up their season against the #9 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on Saturday morning in the Michigan Invitational. Despite a big second half, where the Hoosiers outscored UCSB, 5-2, the Gauchos prevailed, 10-9. Sophomore Tina Doherty led the Hoosiers with three goals and sophomore Lauren Etnyre recorded two steals.

- UCSB jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first 1:06 with goals by Sarah Snyder and Courtney Heydorff.
- Senior attacker Megan Abarta scored the first Hoosier goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 5:34 mark of the first quarter.
- After another Gaucho goal, Doherty scored her first goal of the season off of a powerplay to make the score 3-2 with 3:46 remaining in the first quarter.
- Both teams continued to trade goals in the first quarter with Amelia Meckelborg scoring for UCSB with 2:36 left and then freshman Zoe Crouch scoring her first career goal with 2:16 remaining.
- The Gauchos took a 5-3 lead into the second quarter after a goal from Dani Kauahi at the 1:36 mark of the first.
- Abarta scored her second goal of the game with 1:48 remaining in the first half but the Hoosiers trailed, 8-4, at halftime.
- IU started their second half run with 6:43 remaining in the third quarter on a goal from Doherty that was converted off of a penalty shot. Sophomore Izzy Mandema scored again for the Hoosiers at the 5:12 mark of the third to cut the deficit to 8-6.
- UCSB answered Mandema's goal at the 4:44 point of the third quarter on another Kauahi goal but the Hoosiers responded 28 seconds with Doherty scoring her third goal of the day to bring the score to 9-7.
- The Hoosiers scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter to tie the Gauchos at nine with goals by junior Juli Hilovsky at the 7:08 mark and another goal by Mandema at the 5:16 mark.
- Snyder scored the game-winning goal for UCSB with 1:38 remaining in the game.

- Sophomore goalie, Mary Askew, finished the game with 10 save for the Hoosiers.

- Indiana outscored UCSB 5-2 in the second half and tied the game for the first time in the fourth quarter with 5:16 remaining.
