NOTES: Hoosiers Face No. 17 Texas in Tuesday's Maui Invitational Semifinal

OPENING TIP
Indiana University begins its 121st season of competition in men's basketball and opens the doors of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall for the 50th season IU is coming off a 79-58 win over Providence in the first round of the Camping World Maui Invitational. IU is 12-8 all-time in the Maui Invitational. The Hoosiers have advanced to the semifinals for the first time since winning the event in 2002. The Texas game could be the first of 15 games against teams ranked in the AP Preseason Poll (Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan State, Texas, North Carolina, Florida State, Ohio State, Rutgers, Michigan). The Hoosiers were tied for 7th in the country with 5 wins over nationally ranked teams (Florida State, Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa, Penn State) a year ago. IU was 3-0 last season on neutral courts (UConn, Notre Dame, Nebraska) and the win over Providence gives them four straight wins in a neutral setting. IU is currently 44-22 all-time against Big XII programs. The Hoosiers last played a Big XII school when it beat #3 Kansas 103-99 in overtime to open the 2016-17 season at the Armed Forces Classic in Honolulu.

THE COACHES
Indiana Coach Archie Miller is in his fourth season of guiding the Cream and Crimson and is 57-43 with the Hoosiers. He is 197-106 in nine+ years as a head coach, which includes six years at the University of Dayton. His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2014. Shaka Smart is 92-78 in 5+ seasons in Austin. He coached his VCU team that took on IU in the NCAA Round of 32 swhere the Hoosiers prevailed 63-61.
JACKSON-DAVIS EARNS PRESEASON HONORS
Sophomore forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, a Preseason All-Big Ten pick, has been named to several Preseason All-American teams and is on the watch lists for the Naismith and Malone Award. He was named third team All-Big Ten and also selected to the All-Freshman team. He had 12 double-doubles, the most since D.J. White had 20 in 2007-08. Davis, a native of Greenwood and a graduate of Center Grove High School, averaged a team-best 13.5 points and 8.4 rebounds. He was just one of four freshman nationally a year ago to lead his team in scoring, rebounds, FG percentage, FT made and FT attempted and blocked shots. He was 7th in the B1G in rebounding, 2nd in FG percentage and 7th in blocked shots. He had his 13th career double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds against Tennessee Tech. The Hoosiers are 12-1 when he records a double-double.
MISCELLANEOUS
IU returns seven of its top nine scorers, including four starters. Last year, IU was on the brink of earning its first NCAA Tournament berth since 2016 before the COVID-19 pandemic halted post season play after one game. The Hoosiers finished the season with a 20-12 record. Redshirt junior
Race Thompson had a career-night against Providence. He finished with his first career double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. It was just his second career start. Senior guard Aljami Durham returns along with his 73 career starts. The Georgia native is coming off a game where he had 19 points and six rebounds. Junior guard Rob Phinisee had 11 points and 5 assists against the Friars with no turnovers. Sophomore Armaan Franklin is averaging 8.0 points in the first two games of the season. Freshman Trey Galloway is averaging 8.5 points off the bench in two games. In two games, IU has held opponents to 19.0% from long range (8/42).
