Postgame Notes: Indiana vs. Michigan

TEAM
• No. 13 Indiana (3-0, 3-0 Big Ten) defeated No. 23/25 Michigan (1-2, 1-2 Big Ten), 38-21, at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
• The 3-0 start to Big Ten Conference play is the best start since defeating Northwestern (48-17), Ohio State (41-7) and No. 18 Minnesota (33-13) to open the 1988 conference schedule. The other times in program history: 1987 (4-0), 1967 (5-0).
• IU is 11-5 since the start of the 2019 season and 8-4 in Big Ten play during that time.
• Indiana has won four-straight Big Ten conference games and 8-of-10 dating back to the 2019 season. This marks the most successful stretch since a 9-2 record from Oct. 3, 1987-Oct. 21, 1988.
• After taking down No. 8/7 Penn State (36-35 OT) to open the season, the Hoosiers have defeated two ranked teams this season, marking the sixth time in program history with multiple victories over ranked opponents in the same season, and the first time since 2004:
• For the first time in program history, Indiana has defeated both Penn State and Michigan in the same season.
• Prior to today, Indiana's last win over Michigan came on Oct. 24, 1987, with the No. 14 Hoosiers beating the No. 20 Wolverines, 14-10.
OFFENSE
• The Indiana Hoosiers hit the 30-point threshold for the 12th time since the beginning of the 2019 season, the second-most such games in the Big Ten. Ohio State leads the conference with 15 30-point games.
• Indiana went on a 12-play, 96-yard touchdown drive that chewed up 4:21 seconds of game time right before the halftime break. The drive marked the longest scoring drive in yardage this season, second in both plays and time.
• In total, the Hoosiers recorded four scoring drives of 10-plus plays in the win. Entering the game, IU had totaled just one such drive this season.
• The Hoosier offense have had 16 red zone drives this season and converted all 16 drives into points. Of the 16 scoring drives, 12 have resulted in touchdowns, including 4-for-4 against the Wolverines.
• Redshirt sophomore quarterback Michael Penix Jr. completed 30-of-50 passes for a career-high 342 yards and career-high-tying three passing scores. His 50 attempts were also a career-high.
• The Tampa native has now tossed multiple touchdowns in consecutive games (6 in the last two weeks combined). He has had multiple-touchdown throws in five career games.
• Penix's 342 passing yards are the second-most for a Hoosier passer against Michigan (Ben Chappell 480 yards on Oct. 2, 2010).
• Senior wide receiver Ty Fryfogle turned in a career day with new personal-bests in receptions (7) and yards (142) to go along with his second touchdown in as many weeks.
• The 1,000-yard career receiver has compiled two career 100-yard games (131 at PSU, Nov. 16, 2019) and eight career scores.
• Senior wide receiver Whop Philyor led all receivers with 11 catches for 79 yards. With his 11 grabs Philyor moved in to seventh place on the Indiana career list with 147.
• The Tampa Plant product last pulled in double-digit catches against Nebraska (Oct. 26, 2019) with a 14-catch, 178-yard performance. He extends his own school record with six career double-figure catch games.
• Junior running back Stevie Scott III tallied 24 rushing attempts for 97 yards and a pair of scores. He now owns 24 rushing touchdowns (7th all time) and 26 total scores, eighth in program history.
• The Syracuse, N.Y., native has amassed seven career multi-touchdown games, including two this season. He also matched a season-best with three catches for 13 yards.
• Redshirt junior tight end Peyton Hendershot hauled in four passes for 31 yards and a touchdown. The score gives him three touchdowns in the last two games and nine for his career, the second most by a tight end in program history (Ted Bolser 15).
• Redshirt junior wide receiver Miles Marshall nabbed three receptions for 36 yards and his first touchdown of the 2020 season. The Lilburn, Ga., native has two touchdown catches in his career.
• Sophomore running back Sampson James totaled 29 yards of offense on six carries (20 yards) and one catch (9 yards).
• Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jacolby Hewitt secured his lone catch for 32 yards to set up an Indiana touchdown.
• Graduate transfer offensive lineman Dylan Powell earned his first start in the Cream & Crimson, his fourth career collegiate start overall, at left guard.
DEFENSE
• The Hoosiers recorded a pair of interceptions in the fourth quarter and have recorded a takeaway in 32 of the last 34 games. IU has created eight takeaways during the 2020 season and have scored 34 points off turnovers.
• Indiana has seven total INTs in 2020 and has picked off at least two balls in four-straight games.
• The Hoosier defense held Michigan to just 13 yards rushing, believed to be the lowest yardage output by a Wolverine rushing attack against IU. The 13 rushing yards surrendered was the lowest by an IU opponent since William & Mary charted -32 yards on Aug. 31, 2002 and the fewest by a Big Ten opponent since Purdue tallied -8 yards on Nov. 24, 2001.
• Junior cornerback Reese Taylor had a team-high seven tackles, all solo (tied a career-high), with a career-high two TFLs and his first career sack.
• Junior cornerback Jaylin Williams intercepted a pass for the third-straight game and returned it 36 yards. Williams also had a tackle in the win.
• Junior safety Devon Matthews totaled five tackles, all solo, with his second career interception, a TFL and a pass breakup.
• Junior linebacker Micah McFadden recorded five tackles and one quarterback hurry.
• Sophomore cornerback Tiawan Mullen totaled three tackles, all solo, with two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry.
• Sophomore linebacker D.K. Bonhomme recorded his first career sack and finished the game with two tackles and a TFL.
• Junior linebacker Cam Jones had a pair of tackles and a quarterback hurry.
• Junior defensive lineman James Head Jr. had a sack in the win, pushing his season total to 1.5 and his career mark to 4.0.
SPECIAL TEAMS
• Redshirt sophomore kicker Charles Campbell hit a career-long 52-yard field goal, which is tied for the sixth-longest field goal made in program history.
• Campbell is 6-for-6 on field goals this season and 8-for-8 in his career. Campbell also connected on all five of his PATs in the game, pushing his season total to 11-for-11 and his career mark to 12-for-12.
• Graduate student punter Haydon Whitehead booted five punts for 231 yards (46.2 per punt), including a season-best effort of 54 yards.
• Sophomore long snapper Sean Wracher has snapped in all 16 career games played at Indiana.
