Hoosiers Claim 13 Spots in Saturday Finals

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 23-ranked Indiana University women's swimming and diving team had another successful preliminary round during the final day of competition at the 2020 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Hoosiers placed 13 swimmers and divers in event finals on the final day of action. Three swimmers will contest Championship Finals, five swimmers and one diver will compete in Consolation Finals, and three swimmers and a diver made C Finals.
In addition, senior Cassy Jernberg, sophomore Maggie Wallace, and junior Anne Rouleau will compete in the 1,650 freestyle.
With one competition session remaining, the Hoosiers are in third place with 680 points. No. 19 Ohio State leads with 1,016 points, and No. 5 Michigan is in second with 855 points.
200 Backstroke
Junior Josie Grote did just enough to earn a spot in the 200 Backstroke C Final with a time of 1:57.78. She placed 22nd in the preliminary rounds.
100 Freestyle
The Hoosiers will have four swimmers in the Consolation and C Finals of the 100 Freestyle. Junior Laurel Eiber (49.45) and freshman Ashley Turak (49.49) will compete in the Consolation Final after dropping career best and NCAA B Cut swims.
Freshman Alexis Doherty swam a career-best time of 49.94 and junior Grace Haskett turned in a 50.25 to represent IU in the C Final. Freshman Cora Dupre was disqualified for flinching on the block.
200 Breaststroke
Sophomore Noelle Peplowski made her third Championship Final of the weekend after turning in the fastest qualifying time (2:08.13) in the 200 Breaststroke. Freshman Emily Weiss will be seeded second in the final after clocking in with a new career-best time of 2:08.24.
Junior Bailey Kovac (2:11.97) and junior Abby Kirkpatrick (2:12.97) will each swim in the Consolation Final after notching NCAA B Cut times in the prelims.
200 Butterfly
Freshman Carla Gildersleeve clocked the sixth-best performance by an Indiana swimmer in the prelims to qualify for the 200 Butterfly Championship Final with a career-best time of 1:56.58. She will be seeded sixth in the finals.
Sophomore Mackenzie Looze narrowly missed the A Final with a ninth-place finish in the prelims. She swam a career-best time of 1:57.61, the 12th-best performer in program history, to make the Consolation Final.
Platform Dive
Sophomore Alyssa Wang made her second Consolation Final of the weekend in a diving event with a score of 210.65 in a five-dive preliminary round. Freshman Zain Smith narrowly missed a career-best score with 192.65 points to finish 20th overall. She scored points in all three diving events.

The first five timed finals of the 1,650 freestyle begin at 4:00 p.m. ET, with the action getting started in earnest at 6:30 p.m. ET.
