Thousand Oaks, Calif.—Indiana Women's Water Polo will be traveling to Cal Lutheran Friday and Saturday to compete in the Cal Lutheran Invite for their second of four weekend trips to California this season. For the first time this season, the No. 14 Hoosiers will not see action against at least one ranked opponent.
The Hoosiers will start their four-game weekend off on Friday afternoon when they play Fresno Pacific at 11:45 a.m. and will follow up their play at 6:00 p.m. of the same day against the host, Cal Lutheran. Saturday's matchups will include a game against CSU Monterey Bay at 10:30 a.m. followed by the conclusion against CSU East Bay at 4:45 p.m. The Hoosiers are currently 6-5 on the season and riding a three-game win streak for the second time this season.
Hoosiers Coming Off Perfect Indiana Classic
The third-annual Indiana Classic back on Feb. 15-16 proved to be a successful event for the Hoosiers, who finished 3-0 on the weekend. The three wins helped IU improve to 9-3 all time in the tournament and the win over No. 25 California Baptist marked the fourth win over a ranked team this season.
IU opened up the tournament against St. Francis (PA) and came away with a 14-6 win, which was followed by a 15-7 win over California Baptist later in the day. The Hoosiers closed out the tournament early Sunday morning with a 16-3 victory over Villanova.
Hoosiers Remain 14th In Rankings
Indiana remains 14th in this week's CWPA rankings after having moved up each of the last four weeks. IU did not play this past weekend, which is a big reason they did not move up more.
The MPSF continues to be a strong hold in the CWPA rankings as all seven teams are in the top 14. USC, Stanford and UCLA take up the top three spots and have all season long, while Arizona State is 6th, California is 8th and San Jose State is 13th.
Askew Having A Standout Season In Goal
Sophomore goalie Mary Askew is continuing to have a strong season for the Hoosiers. She has recorded double-digit save games six times and leads the team with 87 saves and is third in the MPSF. She is also second in the MPSF with 8.7 saves per game.
In the Indiana Classic, despite having limited playing time, Askew managed to record 18 saves on just 23 shots faced over three games. She never saw more than a half of action including only one quarter of playing time against St. Francis (PA). She also recorded two steals during the Classic.
Team Defense Still A Priority
Defense was a key to winning at the Indiana Classic and it prevailed with the Hoosiers only giving up an average of 5.3 goals over three games. This includes the game where Indiana gave up a season low three goals to Villanova. The 5.3 goals per game was less than half of the 10.8 goals per game that the Hoosiers were giving up per game coming into the tournament.
This stellar play by the IU defense will have to continue with the toughest part of the schedule still ahead. The Hoosiers will get a good chance to practice and perfect its weaknesses when it travels to Cal Lutheran on Friday.
