IU Finishes Off Second-Straight Perfect Weekend

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.– Indiana Water Polo finished the Cal Lutheran Invite and finished the Invite 4-0 Saturday after getting wins against CSU Monterey Bay, 17-5, and against CSU East Bay, 17-10. The Hoosiers beat Fresno Pacific and Cal Lutheran on Friday. This is the second-straight week of playing that the Hoosiers have gone undefeated.

Leading the Hoosiers on Saturday was sophomore Izzy Mandema, who scored eight total goals and senior Megan Abarta, who scored six total goals. In the game against CSU East Bay, Mandema, Abarta, freshman Zoe Crouch and freshman Berta Pascual each recorded a hat trick.

KEY MOMENTS

IU scored the first three goals against CSU Monterey Bay when Mandema, Abarta and Crouch all scored in the first 4:38 of the game.
Mandema scored her second and third goals in the second quarter as the Hoosiers shutout Monterey Bay to take a 9-2 halftime lead.
Abarta scored her third goal of the game at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter and Mandema scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game with no time remaining in the third quarter and with 6:37 remaining in the game.
After giving up the first goal, Pascual gave the Hoosiers the lead they never relinquished with back-to-back goals as part of a 4-0 Indiana run.
Indiana made their biggest run of the Invite after Monterey Bay scored two goals to make the score 4-3. The Hoosiers went on a 10-0 run with Pascual scoring her third goal and Mandema and Crouch scoring all three of their goals during the run.

NOTABLES

With two wins on Saturday, the Hoosiers improve their record to 10-5 on the season.
IU now leads the all-time series with both CSU Monterey Bay and CSU East Bay, 6-0.
The seven-game win streak is the most for Indiana since the 2017 season when the Hoosiers won 12 straight.
The undefeated weekend is the second-straight weekend of playing that the Hoosiers have gone undefeated.
The four Indiana players recording a hat trick against CSU East Bay is the most in a single game for IU since at least the 2015 season.
Mandema tied her career high with five goals against CSU Monterey Bay and had eight total for the day.
Abarta added six goals for the Hoosiers on Saturday by recording a hat trick in both games.
Pascual and Crouch both set new career highs with three goals a piece against CSU East Bay.
Sophomore goalie Mary Askew picked up six saves against CSU East Bay, while sophomore goalie Sarah Greeven recorded seven saves against CSU Monterey Bay.

UP NEXT

Indiana will return home for the second time this season when they host the Hoosier Invite March 7-8. IU will open up against Mercyhurst at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
