IU Looks To Complete Third-Consecutive Perfect Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Indiana Water Polo looks forward to hosting its second tournament of the season with the Hoosier Invite on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament will be set up like the Indiana Classic that took place earlier this season but this time with the opponents being Cal Lutheran, Mercyhurst and McKendree. Each team will have a chance to play each other and the Hoosiers are looking to make it a third-straight undefeated weekend, which would improve their win streak to 10. All three Indiana games will be streamed on BTN Plus.
The first game will start at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday with IU taking on Mercyhurst and then two neutral site games between McKendree and Cal Lutheran at Noon and Mercyhurst and McKendree at 4 p.m. will follow. IU will close out Saturday's action against Cal Lutheran at 5:30 p.m.
There will only be two games on Sunday as the Hoosiers play McKendree at 9 a.m. Mercyhurst and Cal Lutheran will close out the Hoosier Invite at 10:30 a.m.
Hoosiers Aiming For Longest Win Streak Since 2017
It has been a good run for the Hoosiers, who are currently on a seven game win streak. They have swept their last two weekend events at the Indiana Classic and then this past weekend at the Cal Lutheran Invite.
Now, Indiana is looking to do something they have not done since the 2017 season and that is go on a double-digit win streak. The Hoosiers have a chance to do that this weekend with three winnable games at the Hoosier Invite. They will then go to USC and UCLA the following weekend for a chance to tie the 12-game win streak that was achieved in 2017, assuming they win all three games this weekend.
Abarta and Crouch Sweep Player and Newcomer Of Week Awards
With their performances at the Cal Lutheran Invite, senior Megan Abarta won the MPSF Player of the Week award and freshman Zoe Crouch won the MPSF Newcomer of the Week award. Abarta is the first player to win the Player award, while only sophomore Tina Doherty has won the Newcomer award for the Hoosiers.
Abarta helped the Hoosiers with 12 goals over four games during the Invite on just 16 shots. She turned all four of her shots into goals against Cal Lutheran on Saturday and she also led the team with six steals on the weekend, including three against Cal Lutheran, which tied a season high.
Crouch had the best weekend of her young career with eight goals over four games, including a career-high three goals against Cal State East Bay on Sunday during the Invite. She did all of this, while only taking 10 total shots over four games. She also managed to record at least one steal in all four games and two against Fresno Pacific for a total of five on the weekend. Crouch's and Abarta's defense helped the Hoosiers hold three of their four opponents to single digit goals on the weekend.
Several Hoosiers Ranking In MPSF
As the season progresses, several Hoosiers are in the top 10 in different statistical categories, individually, in the MPSF. Doherty leads the Hoosiers with 38 goals on the season, which marks fourth in the MPSF and Abarta and sophomore Izzy Mandema each have 33 goals, which is tied for sixth in the conference. Doherty and Abarta each have 43 total points, which is tied for seventh in the MPSF. In goal, sophomore Mary Askew is second in the conference with 106 saves.
