Doherty And Pascual Have Big Opening Days At Hoosier Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Indiana Water Polo went 2-0 on its third-straight Saturday of games. This time they opened the Hoosier Invite up by beating the Mercyhurst Lakers, 15-5, and then by beating the Cal Lutheran Regals, 20-3.
Sophomore Tina Doherty and freshman Berta Pascual both had eye-opening days for the Hoosiers. Doherty scored 10 total goals, including six against Cal Lutheran to go along with four steals against the Regals. Pascual had a career-high four assists against Mercyhurst, which is also the highest for a Hoosier player this season and followed that up with two goals and two assists against Cal Lutheran.

- The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Mercyhurst by the 4:07 point of the first quarter with goals from senior Megan Abarta, junior Juli Hilovsky and two goals from Doherty.
- After the Lakers scored the last two goals of the first quarter to cut the deficit to 4-2, Indiana went on a 6-0 run into the third quarter to take a 10-2 lead. Doherty scored her final two goals of the game during this run.
- Abarta scored her second goal of the game against Mercyhurst with 3:38 remaining in the third quarter, which allowed Pascual to record her career-high fourth assist of the game.
- IU never trailed against the Regals as they jumped out to an 11-0 lead with 23 seconds remaining in the first half on a goal by Pascual that was assisted by fellow freshman and reigning MPSF Newcomer of the Week, Zoe Crouch.
- Doherty scored her sixth goal of the game with 5:24 remaining in the game to give the Hoosiers a 17-2 lead over Cal Lutheran.
NOTABLES
- With the two wins, the Hoosiers improve to 12-5 on the season and extend their win streak to nine games, which is the longest since 2017 when the Hoosiers won 12-straight.
- Indiana now leads the all-time series against Mercyhurst 18-0 and 4-0 against Cal Lutheran.
- By holding Mercyhurst and Cal Lutheran to five goals and three goals, IU has now held ten teams to single-digit scoring this season. They are 10-0 in those contests.
- Sophomore goalie Sarah Greeven finished the game against Mercyhurst with six saves and a career-high five steals.
- Freshman Robyn Greenslade recorded her first-career assist against Mercyhurst and picked up two goals, while tallying a career-high two steals.
- Pascual dished out four assists in the win over Mercyhurst, which is not only a career high but also a team high on the season. She followed up with two goals and two assists in the second game against Cal Lutheran.
- Doherty scored four goals on five shots against Mercyhurst and followed up with six goals against McKendree, which gives her 11 games where she has scored more than three goals on the season. Doherty also added a team-high four steals against McKendree.
- Abarta added one goal, three assists and three steals against McKendree.
- The three goals allowed against Cal Lutheran is tied for the lowest scoring allowed by the Hoosiers this season (2/16/20 vs. Villanova and 2/28/20 vs. Fresno Pacific).
