IU Softball Set To Play Miami (OH) in Home Opener

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana Softball (9-9) will play their home opener this week on Tuesday, March 10 against the Miami Redhawks (12-7). First pitch is at 4 PM. The game will be streamed on BTN Plus, and live stats will be available on IUHoosiers.com
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS
The Miami Redhawks enter Tuesday's game with a record of 12-7. This past weekend they hosted Eastern Illinois and Green Bay in Oxford for a pair of games against each team. They took both ballgames from Green Bay and split with Eastern Illinois on the weekend. Miami is batting .255 as a team with junior Morgan Lott (.368, 27 hits, 9 RBI) leading the roster. In the circle, Courtney Vierstra (2.24 ERA, 6-3, 129 SO) has done the most for the Redhawks this season. In 2019, The Redhawks won their first regular season MAC championship in program history under their current Head Coach Clarisa Crowell, who is in her eighth season at the helm. Former IU Softball graduate assistant Morgan Zerkle is an Assistant Coach for the Redhawks. Prior to her time at Indiana, Zerkle was a four-year letter winner at Marshall under Head Coach Shonda Stanton.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana competed in the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. this past weekend taking three out of five ballgames. The Hoosiers fell in their first game against SIUE before earning three straight wins. Two were over South Dakota and one was over Boise State. IU dropped their final game of the weekend to No. 4/5 Arizona.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Over their last 10 ballgames, IU Softball is 7-3. Following their 3-2 weekend in Arizona, Indiana is back to .500 going into this week's seven game slate.
• Known for their speed, Indiana continues to do dominate base paths now sitting fifth nationally in stolen bases per game (2.44). In the Wildcat Invitational alone, the Hoosiers recorded 18 steals.
• Senior Gabbi Jenkins continues to lead the Hoosiers in offensive production hitting .411, and in hits with 23. She continues to be nationally ranked in batting average (121), stolen bases per game (34) and SAC flies (50).
• A pair of Arizona natives, Annika Baez and Taylor Lambert had a nice homecoming in the Wildcat Invitational. Baez went 5-15 with two home runs and six RBI's over the weekend while also recording 46 put-outs. She now leads the Hoosiers in RBI's with 12 on the season. Lambert tallied four hits and three stolen bases in Tucson. She is batting .333 following this past weekend.
WHAT'S AHEAD IN 2020
Following their home opener, Indiana will conclude tournament play in Madeira Beach, Fla. on March 12 for the annual Spring Games. While in Madeira Beach, the Hoosiers will face Creighton, Toledo, Central Michigan, Brown, South Dakota State and Buffalo.
Wrapping up the non-conference schedule, Indiana will see three midweek games including NCAA Regional participants in Louisville and Notre Dame. The Cardinals will come to town on March 24 at 5 p.m. before the Hoosiers clash with the Fighting Irish on March 31 beginning at 4 p.m. Both teams were top 50 in RPI, Louisville was No. 38 in while Notre Dame checked in No. 39. Rounding out the nonconference schedule, Indiana will take on Morehead State on April 22.
Indiana opens up Big Ten play against Penn State at home March 20-22. Other conference home weekends include NCAA participants Ohio State (Mar. 27-29) and Minnesota (Apr. 17-19), who advanced to the Women's College World Series, before concluding the 2020 regular season at home vs. Iowa (May 1-3). The Big Ten road slate commences on April 3-5 when the Hoosiers travel to College Park to take on Maryland. Other road games include Nebraska (Apr. 10-12) and Illinois (Apr. 24-26), who made NCAA Regionals last season, prior to the annual doubleheader vs. Purdue on April 29 in West Lafayette. This year's Big Ten Tournament will be hosted by Illinois from May 7-9.
