A Look Back at IUWS History

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Indiana University Women's Soccer program completed has completed 27 seasons as of 2020. Prior to the beginning of the 28th year for IUWS, IUHoosiers.com would like to take a look back at the history of the program.
The Indiana Women's Soccer program began intercollegiate play in the fall of 1993 under the guidance of head coach Joe Kelley.
IUWS went 12-6 in its inaugural season and finished the year on a nine-game winning streak. During the Kelley era from 1993-2001, the Hoosiers competed in five Big Ten Tournaments from 1994 to 1998 winning their first in program history in fall of 1996. Indiana earned three straight shut-out wins over Penn State, Northwestern and Wisconsin to win the title and reach their very first NCAA Tournament appearance. The first NCAA tournament victory for Indiana Women's Soccer would be two years later on Nov. 11, 1998 over Wright State.
This era saw Wendy Dillinger enter as part of Indiana's first recruiting class. She would go on to hold the career records at IU for goals (37), points (98), assists (24), game winning goals (13) and multi-goal games (8). Kelley also coached five First Team All-Big Ten honorees as well as the first All-American in IUWS history - Tracy Grose (1998).

Mick Lyon took the helm of the program prior to the 2002 season. He would guide the Hoosiers over the next 10 seasons (2002-2012), in which Indiana made six straight appearances in the Big Ten Tournament from 2002 to 2007. IU's third run in the NCAA Tournament was also the longest for the program in 2007. The Hoosiers advanced to the third round earning victories over Toledo and Purdue before falling to Duke.
The Lyon era saw great players such as Kelly Lawrence and Orianica Velasquez play for the Cream and Crimson. Lawrence, a four-year starter, became the only player in program history to earn All-Big Ten honors all four years, and is also the only three-time All-Region honoree in IU program history. In addition, she was a three-time all-region honoree and was on the Mac Herman Watch List in 2008. Lawrence won two WPSL national championships, one with Boston Breakers Reserves in 2010 and one with Orange County Waves in 2011. She is currently the Associate Head Coach of the women's soccer program at Boston University.
Orianica Velasquez played for IU from 2009 to 2012. Velasquez finished fourth on the career points list at IU (64), is tied for fourth in career goals (26), tied for eighth in career assists (12) and also remains the school record holder for career shots (120). During her career at IU Valasquez participated in the World Cup and Olympics with her native country of Columbia, and became the first Indiana Women's Soccer player to participate in the Olympics.
From 2013 to 2018, IUWS was under the guidance of head coach Amy Berbary. In 2013, the Hoosiers posted a 15-7-1 record and earned a berth in the Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments for the first time since 2007. The team set single-season records for wins (15), goals (43), assists (46) and shutouts (9) during the 2013 season while senior Lisa Nouanesengsy was named NSCAA All-Region First Team. The Hoosiers returned to the Big Ten Tournament in 2016. In 2018, put up the most goals (33) and assists (39 since 2013.
Erwin van Bennekom was hired as the fourth Head Coach in IUWS program history on Dec. 4, 2018. In his first season at the helm, Indiana went 8-9-2 on the year and advanced to the program's 14th appearance in the Big Ten Tournament. Allison Jorden, Avery Lockwood and Hanna Németh all earned Big-Ten season awards for 2019. Jorden was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team for her first All-Big Ten award of her career, Lockwood was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team and Németh was tabbed as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree. Bethany Kopel shutout nine opponents in 2019 including six Big Ten matches. With her efforts, Kopel set the new program record for most shutouts in a career with 16.
