New Zealand native freshman Piper Maaka gives us an update on what she's been up to in the past few weeks.
Where are you at right now?
I'm at home in Wellington, New Zealand!
How are you interacting with your teammates?
I'm always using Snapchat, GroupMe, WhatsApp and FaceTime.
What advice would you give your fellow Hoosiers during this time?
Take the time to be a little selfish and do something that will make you happy (doing a craft, focusing on a goal you've wanted to do, learning a language, instrument, etc). Why not make the most of this time to take care and learn something new about yourself, whatever it may be.
What are you most looking forward to when you get back on the water?
I can't wait to go back to all my girls and goof around. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, and I can't help but overlook all of the hilarious moments with my team. I'm looking forward to working even harder than last season, endlessly with all of my teammates. Our short season may have gone unnoticed and I can't wait to come back and make a statement.
How has the adjustment gone to online classes?
A little strange not seeing all the usual faces but my professors have made the switch as easy as possible for us, which has made all the difference. It has definitely been different with my new timezone but it has given me the opportunity to smash it all out in the morning so I can spend my evenings in the sun!
What gives you encouragement and motivation during this time?
My teammates, friends, family, and coaches. All my fantastic past times give me so much to look forward to and work for.
What is something you and your family are doing to pass the time?
We go for hikes, bake plenty, watch movies, and play board games (my favorite is Cluedo).
What shows are you watching?
I have watched almost an embarrassing amount of shows this past month. To name a few I've watched On My Block, Trials of Gabriel Fernandez, Black Mirror, and I'm currently rewatching Game of Thrones (OBSESSED).
What is your major and what are your future career plans?
My major is Exercise Science and Kinesiology. I'm still exploring my options for after undergrad, but I know I love helping people and would love to be a physiotherapist.
