BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Senior Michelle McKamey is a Big Ten postgraduate scholarship recipient, the conference announced on Thursday. Two student-athletes from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were each awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based primarily on academic achievements.
McKamey graduated with a degree in community health in May of 2020. While at Indiana McKamey earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar award.
McKamey, a native of Paducah, Ky., will be attending the Indiana University School of Optometry in the fall of 2020.
"I'm so grateful to be a student-athlete at Indiana University," McKamey said. I'm also very grateful that IU is part of the Big Ten Conference. The things the Big Ten does for its athletes are second to none. This is a huge honor to receive this scholarship and makes a huge difference moving forward."
In addition to her academic achievements, McKamey has participated in several extracurricular activities and community service initiatives.
McKamey was the Vice President of the Pre-Optometry Club as well as a Hoosier Hero Peer Mentor, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative and participated in the Emerging Leaders program. She has volunteered her time with Riley Children's Hospital, Trick or Treat for Glasses and the Bloomington Breast Cancer Awareness Walk.
"We are so proud of Michelle for everything she has achieved both on and off the court," IU head coach Ramiro Azcui said. She works tremendously hard in everything she does and this award is a recognition of her dedication."
Each Big Ten institution developed its own on-campus selection process when awarding the scholarship. Students must have maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point-average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intended to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree at a graduate degree program.
The scholarship will be used to pay expenses of the student's postgraduate education to include such related activities as research and teaching, as well as other expenses such as tuition, fees, room and board, required course-related supplies and books. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program within three years from the fall semester after selection.
