BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– Vito Maurici wrestled at Indiana from 1991-94. He earned a podium spot at the Midlands Championships in 1993 with a third-place finish at heavyweight. Twice he was an All-Big Ten performer with a fifth-place finish as a sophomore and third-place as a senior. He was a two-time NCAA qualifier and Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient.
Maurici, an Academic All-Big Ten honoree, earned the IU wrestling Billy Thom Leadership Award in 1993 and 1994.
Today Maurici, his wife Nicole, and their four children, Ariana (13), Pasquale (12), Nico (10) and Marcello (6) live in Austin, Texas.
Maurici graduated from IU with a Bachelors Degree in Marketing and Management from the Kelley School of Business and is currently the Senior Vice President of Sales for the McLane Company.
Q: When did you first start wrestling and how did you get interested in the sport?
A: I started in high school, which is really late in today's standards. I started to stay in shape for football and fell in love with the sport.
Q: What did you enjoy the most from your student-athlete experience at IU?
A: Really the whole experience. I loved my teammates and working so hard with the team. I really enjoyed the challenge and growth from the Kelley School of Business. Some of the best years of my life were wrestling at IU.

Q: What did you learn from your experience at IU that you have used later in life?
A: Mental toughness and the ability to overcome obstacles as well as the ability to lead. Dan Gable's quote is spot on "once you have wrestled everything in life is easy."
Q: What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
A: I enjoy working out and spending time with my family.
Q: What is it like being the father of four children and what do you enjoy doing with them?
A: It is a true blessing from God. My daughter is involved in ballet, band and swimming. I really enjoy spending time with her on these activities. My boys all wrestle, play football and swim. I spend a lot of free time with them throwing the ball and working on their sports. My youngest son Marcello, is 7 and he is playing all sports - I really enjoy watching him grow. As the youngest of 4 he is getting better at all sports, out of necessity.

Q: What advice do you have for the IU wrestling team of 2020?
A: Enjoy this time in your life with your teammates and coaches. This time goes by so fast and the hard work and mental toughness will be applicable for all aspects of your life.
