BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Guard Armaan Franklin was back, and all things seemed Cream and Crimson possible Thursday night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
They weren't.
Indiana's 81-69 loss to Purdue hurt in a lot of ways.
"We wanted to be the team to change the culture," Franklin said. "Write a different story. We couldn't make enough plays."
A pause.
"We'll see them again. We'll try to pick it up next time."
What do you when you can't hit from long-range and your opponent seemingly can't miss?
If you're coach Archie Miller, you get back to work and try to take advantage of an unexpected break -- Sunday's game at Michigan State was postponed because of a Covid-19 outbreak with the Spartans.
Now IU won't play until Thursday at Iowa.
"It comes at a time where we have a couple of guys banged up," Miller said. "We have a few extra days to get locked in."
IU (8-6 overall, 3-4 in the Big Ten) couldn't overcome 3-for-18 3-point shooting and a 16-for-29 effort from the line.
Not when Purdue (9-5, 4-3) was 11-for-17 on 3-pointers.
"Offensively, we have to shoot better and make more free throws," Miller said. "We've got a lot to work on."
And one other thing:
"We can't lose that defense."
Despite an ankle injury that sidelined Franklin for two straight games, the sophomore played with the body-sacrificing ferocity only the most dedicated can muster.
He totaled 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals in 33 minutes.
Not bad for a guy whose play was a game-time decision.
"I didn't know what he'd be able to do," Miller said. "He was cleared to go. He said he felt good.
"I'm sure he'll be sore. He was very aggressive. He didn't shoot it well (6-for-15 overall, 0-for-5 from 3-point range), but he made good things happen. It was good to have him back."
Added Franklin: "I didn't feel that great on Tuesday. Wednesday I started feeling better. Today it felt good enough. I felt I could do some things and help the team out."
Franklin had a bad ankle. Guard Rob Phinisee had a sore knee. Both played through it. This was Purdue. Sitting wasn't an option.
Still …
"We had to play harder," Franklin said.
Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis had 25 points. Forward Race Thompson had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
Still…
"Our effort wasn't as good as it needed to be," Miller said.
Of course, it got testy. All good rivalries do, and this ranks among the nation's best.
A brief shoving match late in the first half drew double technicals from Purdue's Sasha Stefanovic and Thompson.
IU's first-half defense went from myth to dominant faster than you could say Franklin was really missed. In the final 6:30, the Hoosiers forced five turnovers and held the Boilers to 1-for-5 shooting. A double-digit deficit turned into a more manageable four.
It suggested good second-half things were coming.
They didn't.
"Offensively the first four to eight minutes of the second half, we were fine," Miller said. "But we could not get stops."
A fast-paced first six minutes delivered a 15-10 Purdue lead behind three three-pointers. IU countered with 4-for-6 Jackson-Davis inside shooting.
The Hoosiers tied it at 15-15 on an Aljami Durham 3-pointer and a Phinisee basket.
But the Boilers, hitting 6-of-7 three-pointers, pushed ahead 29-17 midway through the first half.
It led 33-22 when IU's defensive turned nasty, fueling a 9-0 run that cut the lead to two. Purdue countered with a 7-0 before the Hoosiers scored the final four points of the half to trail 40-36.
IU attacked its way to a series of free throws. Purdue countered with more sharp-shooting. The Hoosiers closed within a point with 13 minutes left. The Boilers pushed ahead by five, then 10, then 12. Forward Trevion Williams, on his way to a 22-point, 10-rebound effort, took charge.
Indiana went with full-court pressure, forced a turnover, then a foul, then got a pair of Thomson free throws. Purdue missed five straight free throws, and committed a foul. Jackson-Davis made a free throw. IU trailed 75-69.
But Purdue freshman guard Brandon Newman made a pair of free throws, blocked a Jerome Hunter three-pointer and forced a Hoosier turnover.
The comeback was over.
"At this point," Miller said, "one loss feels monumental. One win feels great.
"We've got a lot more coming."
