Tri Meet Next for Indiana Wrestling

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.– The Indiana wrestling team continues the 2021 season this week as they will take part in a tri meet hosted by Northwestern. The Hoosiers will wrestle Northwestern as well as Penn State.

Attendance at 2020-21 Big Ten Wrestling matches will be limited to the immediate family of student-athletes, coaching staff, wrestling personnel and members of the team traveling parties.
ABOUT PENN STATE
• This will be the first competition of the season for Penn State after having their first two events postponed.
• Nine of the 10 wrestlers in their probable lineup are ranked.
• In the 2019-20 season Penn State went 12-2 in duals with an 8-1 mark in Big Ten dual matches.
• Penn State finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships last season. Aaron Brooks who is expected to wrestle was a Big Ten Champion.
ABOUT NORTHWESTERN
• Northwestern comes in with a record of 1-2 on the 2021 season. The Wildcats beat Maryland 21-12, but lost to Purdue (28-8) and Nebraska (26-10).
• #7 Michael DeAugustino is expected to make his season debut this weekend. DeAugustino, at 125 lb. finished in third-place last year at the Big Ten Championships.
• Northwestern finished the 2019-19 season with a dual match record of 6-7 and 3-6 in the Big Ten.
SERIES HISTORY
• Penn State leads the all-time series 16-0-1. The last match was in Bloomington on 1/27/19 and Penn State won 35-9.
• Indiana leads the all-time series vs. Northwestern 46-34-4. Last season in Evanston Northwestern won a tight 21-15 dual. The last Indiana win was 1/27/17 when the Hoosiers won in Evanston, 23-14.
NOTES
• The Hoosiers will have nine dual matches over the course of the 2021 season.
• The Hoosiers have 23 freshmen/sophomores on their 2021 roster.
• Indiana returns three NCAA qualifiers in Brock Hudkins, Graham Rooks and Garrett Hoffman.
• Indiana opened the season with a 39-3 defeat against Illinois. Donnell Washington provided the Hoosiers a 6-3 victory.
• Indiana has six wrestlers that are ranked this week.
• The Hoosiers have had back-to-back recruiting classes ranked in the top-25. Their 2019 class was ranked 16 and their 2020 class was ranked 25.
• Indiana set an attendance record for average fans per match in the 2019-20 season.
• Cayden Rooks finished the 2020 season with a 21-13 record as a true freshman. He wrestled in eight Big Ten dual matched and finished with a 4-4 record.
• Graham Rooks was an NCAA qualifier a season ago. Rooks beat five ranked opponents last season. Rooks makes his 2021 season debut on Saturday.
• Indiana has three sets of brothers on their team (Graham Rooks and Cayden Rooks, Nico Bolivar and Eddie Bolivar and Jonathan Moran and Jacob Moran)
• IU head coach Angel Escobedo is in his third season with the team. Escobedo wrestled at Indiana from 2007-10 and won the national championship at 125 lb. in 2008. Escobedo is the only four-time All-American in Indiana wrestling program history.
• In the dual against Michigan, Asa Garcia and Nick Willham posted wins for the Hoosiers.
• In extra matches, Jacob Moran beat former cadet world champion and No. 1 recruit Kurt McHenry.
